The latest episode of Shrinking brings back a familiar face that completely turns Jimmy’s world upside down. Season 3 Episode 9, titled “Daddy Issues,” dropped on Apple TV+ on March 25, 2026, and it forces the characters to face uncomfortable truths about family, selfishness, and what it really means to grow up.
Jeff Daniels joins the cast as Randy, Jimmy’s estranged father, and his arrival shakes up the household just when things were starting to feel stable. What follows is an emotional unraveling that costs Jimmy something he didn’t even realize he wanted until it was gone.
Randy’s Arrival Exposes Jimmy’s Unhealed Wounds
The episode opens with Jimmy hiking with his friends, including Gaby who is slowly coming back to life after Maya’s death. But even in the middle of laughter and fresh air, Jimmy can’t shake memories of his late wife Tia.
Everything changes when Randy shows up unannounced. He walks into Jimmy’s home with the kind of charm that instantly wins over Derek, Alice, and Summer. Even Sofi, the woman Jimmy has been carefully building a connection with, finds herself charmed by the easygoing father.
But Jimmy sees something completely different. While everyone else laughs at Randy’s stories and appreciates his warmth, Jimmy watches with simmering frustration. His father talks about childhood memories like the home run Jimmy hit or the lost tooth he kept in his pocket. But to Jimmy, these moments only prove his father’s absence—showing up for the highlight reels while missing everything in between.
The tension comes to a head when Randy gifts his car to Alice and then skips her graduation party to go on a fishing trip. It’s the kind of move that shows Randy’s love comes with conditions and convenience, not genuine sacrifice.
Jimmy Sabotages His Relationship With Sofi
What makes this episode especially painful to watch is how Jimmy’s unresolved anger toward his father destroys something new and promising. His relationship with Sofi has been growing slowly, with both of them navigating the delicate process of opening up again after loss.
But when Sofi expresses that she likes Randy, something breaks inside Jimmy. He tells her about how Tia also disliked his father, and that shared disdain became a bond between them. When Sofi doesn’t feel the same way, Jimmy blurts out a comparison that she rightly refuses to accept.
“She refuses to be measured against his late wife, leading Jimmy to end the budding relationship before it formally begins.” — Episode recap
Sofi calls him out for bringing Tia into the argument, and Jimmy realizes he isn’t ready. The relationship ends not because of anything Sofi did wrong, but because Jimmy’s past won’t let him move forward.
Paul and Gaby Share the Episode’s Most Powerful Moment
While Jimmy’s story deals with loss and sabotage, Paul (Harrison Ford) and Gaby (Jessica Williams) deliver a scene that reminds viewers why this show handles emotional weight so well.
Paul has been pushing Gaby to return to work after Maya’s death, and he initially frames taking over his practice as the logical next step. But Liz steps in with her usual directness and points out that Paul isn’t thinking about Gaby’s dreams—he’s thinking about his own legacy. She reminds him that Gaby always wanted to work in trauma treatment, not spend her career doing the kind of therapy Paul specializes in.
Sean also plays a role in Paul’s realization. When Sean points out how much Paul has changed since they started working together, it clicks for the older therapist. He has grown because of the people around him, and that’s the legacy he should focus on.
Paul goes to Gaby’s office and admits that losing a patient scared him away from trauma care. He tells her she is the stronger therapist and deserves to follow her own path.
“Gaby, you are my legacy.” — Paul to Gaby
It’s a moment of honesty that contrasts sharply with Randy’s selfishness. Where Randy believes he’s already perfect and doesn’t need to change, Paul recognizes that the people in his life have made him better.
Sean Chooses Growth Over Comfort
Sean’s storyline in this episode focuses on a difficult career decision. He gets offered a sous-chef position from Dre Thibodeaux, a well-known restaurateur. It’s the kind of opportunity that could change his entire future.
But accepting the job means closing his food truck, which would leave Jorge without work. Jorge helped Sean through a painful breakup and has been a steady presence in his life. Walking away feels like betrayal.
Derek and Brian encourage Sean to think differently about selfishness. Brian gives a speech about how being happy yourself is the only way to truly help others. It’s delivered with his usual humor, but the message lands.
When Sean tells Jorge the news, the reaction is raw and angry. But Sean stays calm, showing how much he has grown. The moment is uncomfortable, but it’s honest.

What This Episode Reveals About Growth
The title “Daddy Issues” fits every storyline in different ways. Jimmy’s anger toward his father stops him from moving forward. Paul has to confront his own past with a violent father to understand what he’s doing with Gaby. Even Sean’s decision about the food truck ties back to loyalty and the fear of letting people down.
What makes the episode work is how it shows that growth doesn’t always look pretty. Jimmy takes a step backward. Sean moves forward but hurts someone he cares about. Paul finally lets go of control. Gaby finds her direction again.
The episode also makes a clear comparison between Randy and Paul. Both are older men with complicated pasts. But Paul has done the work to change. Randy remains stuck, believing his charm and selective memory are enough.
Shrinking Season 3 has two episodes remaining. With Jimmy’s relationship with Sofi now over, Alice’s graduation approaching, and Sean’s career taking a new direction, the final episodes have plenty to wrap up.
The show has already been renewed for a fourth season, so while this season will end in April, there’s more to come from this group of therapists and friends trying to figure out how to be better people.
