CBS’s long-running drama NCIS reached a major milestone on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, with its 500th episode. The celebration came with a heavy price as the show said goodbye to one of its longest-serving characters in a shocking and emotional hour of television.
The episode titled “All Good Things” ended with the death of Rocky Carroll’s Leon Vance, the NCIS Director who joined the show back in 2008 during its fifth season. After 18 years on the series, Carroll’s departure marks one of the most significant cast exits in the show’s history, leaving the team to process a loss that will reshape the agency moving forward.
The End of an Era for NCIS Director Leon Vance
The 500th episode placed the entire NCIS agency in crisis. The Department of Defense moved to shut down the organization following a corruption scandal. Vance refused to let his agency go down without a fight, working to uncover a conspiracy built on falsified numbers by a corrupt official.
The danger escalated when a bomb threat emerged, targeting evidence that could save NCIS. Vance and an Army CID agent worked together to secure the building. But the real threat stood next to him. The CID agent turned out to be part of the smuggling ring the team had been investigating. The agent pulled a gun and shot Vance.
For a moment, it appeared the Director might survive. He wore a bulletproof vest. But the shooting proved fatal. In the episode’s final moments, Vance had a conversation with a young version of Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, played by Adam Campbell from the spinoff NCIS: Origins. The scene revealed Ducky had come to guide his friend to the afterlife.
Executive producer Steven D. Binder explained the decision to bring Campbell back for the scene.
“I happened to catch one of the Young Ducky episodes on Paramount+, and the moment I saw Adam’s face, I realized what it needed to be.” – Steven D. Binder, NCIS Executive Producer
Binder told reporters the team wanted to honor Carroll’s legacy properly.
“It is never easy to say goodbye to any of our characters, but we wanted to honor Rocky and his legacy on the show as best as we could – in this case, giving his life so his agency could live.” – Steven D. Binder
Rocky Carroll Reflects on His 18-Year Run
Carroll learned about his character’s fate just two episodes before filming the 500th episode. The news came in November 2025 from Binder, who approached the actor after a day of filming.
Carroll recalled the moment with PEOPLE magazine, describing it as an out-of-body experience.
“I remember sitting there for a minute and having this out-of-body experience. Steve, he goes, ‘You want to hear more about the story?’ And I was like, ‘Let me process the whole thing, what you just told me. Let me take a moment, because right now I’m kind of having a bit of an out-of-body experience.’ This wasn’t one of those scenarios where I came to the network or I came to the producers and said, ‘Hey, it’s been a great run, but I think I want to move on.’” – Rocky Carroll
Despite the shock, Carroll quickly came to appreciate the storytelling behind the decision. He told TV Insider that his creative side recognized the quality of the narrative.
“It was basically presented to me that the studio and the network wanted to do something really spectacular, really big, and something that would really send shockwaves through the NCIS fan base and the community. In the process of saving the agency, he loses his life. It’s a great story.” – Rocky Carroll
Carroll joined NCIS during its fifth season in 2008, replacing the previous NCIS Director who also died in the line of duty. He never expected to stay on the show for nearly two decades. Reflecting on his tenure, he compared his long run to living a full life.
“To play a character for 18 seasons on one of the most-watched TV shows in the world is the equivalent to having lived to be 105. In my world, it’s like if you go to a memorial service for somebody who lived to be 105, your thought is, yeah, I’m sorry he’s gone, but I mean, geez, he lived to be 105. That’s kind of how I feel about my character.” – Rocky Carroll
The actor confirmed his departure was not his choice but something he embraced. He also revealed that fans have not seen the last of him entirely. Carroll has directed multiple episodes of NCIS during his time on the show and plans to return behind the camera.
“The last day of shooting was December the 11th. But in the back of my mind I knew it was goodbye for now, because a month later I came back and directed an episode of the show. So I’m sort of a visiting relative. As far as I know, I’ll be back next season to direct episodes. We’ve already talked about bringing Vance back in flashbacks.” – Rocky Carroll
A Farewell Designed as a Tribute
Binder wrote the 500th episode with a clear goal in mind. He wanted the story to serve as a proper sendoff for Carroll after 18 years of service to the show.
“Steve Binder said, ‘This is going to be a love letter to your character. It’s going to be a tribute to Vance.’ And when we finished it, I said, ‘I think we accomplished that.’” – Rocky Carroll
The episode included a montage showing Vance through the years alongside former cast members including Mark Harmon (Gibbs), Michael Weatherly (Tony), Cote de Pablo (Ziva), David McCallum (Ducky), Pauley Perrette (Abby), and Emily Wickersham (Bishop).
Binder told TV Insider the team wanted to maintain real stakes for the series.
“There have always been real stakes. Perhaps as best embodied by what happened to Agent Todd (Sasha Alexander) in the Season 2 finale.” – Steven D. Binder
The 500th episode also featured notable guest stars. Matt Cook, known for the comedy Man with a Plan, played Agent Thompson. Adhir Kalyan, who starred in United States of Al, appeared in a key role as the character who initially came to arrest Vance.

What the Death Means for the NCIS Team
The episode ended with the conspiracy unraveled and NCIS reinstated. Alden Parker (Gary Cole) came out of retirement to rejoin the team. But the victory came at the cost of their leader’s life.
Binder explained how the team will process the loss in episodes to come.
“The team will be grieving, of course. But we felt it important that, at the end of the episode, the team is just as focused on Vance’s sacrifice as they are on their loss. Vance died to protect them all. And they are going to honor that by putting one foot in front of the other, and just continuing on their mission to protect and safeguard their country.” – Steven D. Binder
The departure of Vance leaves a significant hole in the agency’s leadership structure. The show has not yet announced who will step in as the new NCIS Director. With the series already renewed for a 24th season, viewers can expect the aftermath of Vance’s death to play a central role in upcoming episodes.
New episodes of NCIS air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and stream the next day on Paramount+.
