HBO Max has officially opened the gates to Hogwarts once again. The streaming service surprised fans on Wednesday by releasing the first official teaser for the upcoming Harry Potter television series, giving the world its first real look at the new cast and the reimagined wizarding world.
The nearly two-minute trailer, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, dropped without prior announcement and immediately became the biggest talking point on social media. While the teaser showcases the iconic moments from the first book—from Harry’s life under the stairs at the Dursleys to his first journey to Hogwarts—it was a brief glimpse of one particular character that split the internet right down the middle.
A First Look at the New Hogwarts
The teaser introduces Dominic McLaughlin as the new Harry Potter. The 11-year-old actor is shown facing the bullying of his cousin Dudley and the stern lectures of Aunt Petunia before the Hogwarts letters begin to arrive. Viewers also get their first proper look at Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, alongside veteran actors John Lithgow (Albus Dumbledore) and Nick Frost (Rubeus Hagrid).
The teaser highlights several key scenes from the book. It includes the moment Harry learns he is a wizard, the journey on the Hogwarts Express, and quick cuts of the Sorting Hat ceremony and Quidditch matches. The visual style of the series appears darker and more detailed than the original films, aiming for what HBO describes as a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s source material.
The Snape Controversy Takes Center Stage
The most debated moment in the teaser is the appearance of Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape. The actor, known for his work in I May Destroy You and Black Mirror, appears briefly in a dimly lit Hogwarts corridor casting a spell. While the appearance is short, it was enough to confirm how the character will look in the series.
The casting of Essiedu, a Black British actor, has been a point of contention since it was first announced earlier this year. The teaser has reignited the debate, with many fans expressing frustration over the character’s appearance diverging from the book’s original description.
“Paapa Essiedu looks more like the vampire Laurent from ‘Twilight’ than he ever will Severus Snape. Good luck with that,” one user wrote on X.
Another fan added, “Snape is bullied by Harry’s father because he looks different, and now you race-swapped him as Black. Paapa Essiedu would be a good Shacklebolt actor, not Snape. Especially when Adam Driver is right there! You guys have no idea what this backlash gonna be like”.
Essiedu has previously spoken about the intense backlash he faced following the casting news. He told The Times that he received threats, including messages saying, “Quit or I’ll murder you.” He addressed the hate by focusing on the themes of the story.
“The themes that run through Harry Potter are of love triumphing over hate — of acceptance. And that’s why I’m doing it,” Essiedu said.
Fans Defend the Actor and the Show
Despite the vocal criticism, a significant portion of the fanbase has rallied behind Essiedu and the new cast, urging others to wait until the show airs before making final judgments. Many pointed out that the book describes Snape as having a “sallow” complexion, which does not specify a particular race, and that his character arc is about complexity and redemption, not skin color.
“Let’s be honest. No one can ever replace Alan Rickman’s Snape. He was truly the best performer amidst giants. His passing makes us love him even more. But we don’t know how Paapa Essiedu will portray the same character. If this adaptation has to happen, then hating on its performers before it is out is very unreasonable,” one fan wrote.
Others praised the teaser for its commitment to the books. One viewer noted, “Harry being bullied by Dudley at school when he ends up on the roof. Like this is for the book fans,” appreciating the inclusion of specific details from the novel that were left out of the films.
HBO’s Security and Casting Challenges
The controversy surrounding the cast has been significant enough that HBO has had to take extra precautions. HBO boss Casey Bloys confirmed to Variety that the production has installed “serious security” on set due to the threats made against cast members.
“With all actors on any kind of big IP shows – and this is obviously one of those where you’ve got passionate fans, people with a lot of opinions – it can get scary in places,” Bloys said.
The series is currently in production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. It is being led by showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod. JK Rowling serves as an executive producer, and HBO has stated the series will be a faithful adaptation of her books across multiple seasons.

Release Details and What to Expect
The teaser confirmed a major update regarding the release schedule. The first season, consisting of eight episodes, is scheduled to arrive on HBO Max in Christmas 2026. This is earlier than the previously rumored 2027 release date.
The series will be available on HBO Max in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, and Italy, among other regions. The show is expected to run for ten years, with each season covering one of the seven books in the series.
The full cast includes Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, and Daniel Rigby and Bel Powley as Vernon and Petunia Dursley. The actor playing Lord Voldemort has not yet been cast, though rumors about names like Tilda Swinton have been denied by HBO executives.
Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry in the original films, has already reached out to the new cast. He revealed in a recent interview that he wrote a letter to Dominic McLaughlin wishing him well on the journey.
“I just wanted to write to him to say, ‘I hope you have the best time, and an even better time than I did – I had a great time, but I hope you have an even better time’,” Radcliffe said.
