The new series Widow’s Bay is bringing a mix of scares and laughs to Apple TV+ very soon. This show combines horror with comedy, set in a small island town where strange things start happening. The series comes from a strong creative team and features a well-known lead actor.
The show’s creator is Katie Dippold, known for writing movies like The Heat and Ghostbusters. Hiro Murai, who directed episodes of Atlanta, The Bear, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, directed the pilot and works as an executive producer. The show is produced by Apple Studios.
When Does Widow’s Bay Start Streaming?
Widow’s Bay is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. The first three episodes will be available to watch on that day. After the premiere, new episodes will come out every Wednesday.
The 10-episode season will run until June 17, 2026. This gives viewers a weekly schedule to follow. The show will be available globally on Apple TV+.
Who Is in the Cast?
Matthew Rhys plays the main role of Mayor Tom Loftis. Rhys won an Emmy for his work on The Americans and also starred in Perry Mason. This is his first main role in a comedy series.
The cast also includes a group of experienced actors:
- Kate O’Flynn as Patricia
- Stephen Root as Wyck
- Kingston Rumi Southwick as Evan Loftis
- Kevin Carroll as Bechir
- Dale Dickey as Rosemary
- Jeff Hiller as Dale
Root and Rhys worked together before on Perry Mason. Root said he was surprised by Rhys’s comedy skills. “At the end of this series, I wrote him an email saying, ‘The most amazing thing I saw throughout this series was you doing every kind of acting, broad comedy, small comedy, devastating drama, and farce,’” Root shared. “It was watching a really good theater actor do everything that you can do.”
What Is Widow’s Bay About?
The story takes place on a small island called Widow’s Bay, located 40 miles off the coast of New England. Mayor Tom Loftis wants to bring tourists to the island to help the local economy. The island has no Wi-Fi and poor cell service. The local residents believe the island is cursed.
Loftis does not believe in the curse. He thinks the stories are just old tales. But when tourists finally start coming, strange events from the old stories begin to happen again. The show blends genuine scary moments with character-driven comedy.
Creator Katie Dippold first wrote the idea for this show when she was trying to get a writing job on Parks and Recreation. She kept working on it for years. “This is my version of the novel that a writer’s always trying to do,” Dippold told TV Insider. “If someone read the Parks spec from back then, and they read this one, I think the heart of it is the same.”
Hiro Murai explained how the show uses its setting to create mood. “What appealed to me in the script was the idea that this island existed in modern day but displaced in time because of its remoteness,” Murai said. “There’s a nostalgic quality to these rustic locations with old rotary phones and tube TVs. It’s all very quaint and fuzzy feeling. But then there’s also this sense of unease — like it’s not quite how you remember it.”
Matthew Rhys on His First Comedy Role
For Matthew Rhys, playing in a comedy was a new challenge. He usually takes on serious dramatic roles. “The challenge and terror of that was immediate for me,” Rhys admitted. “But the piece itself is so unique.”
He said the mix of horror and comedy creates a special experience for viewers. “They’re true opposites of each other and therefore, sometimes, especially in the more horrific elements, the relief that the comedy brings is so welcome, and it becomes more extreme, because you’re just so relieved,” Rhys explained. “The two complement each other. To swing as violently from a comedic moment into a horror moment has this same effect.”
Murai noted that Rhys’s dramatic skills became the core of the show. “At a certain point, I realized this whole show is about anxiety,” Murai said. “Matthew is so good at playing discomfort and repressed fear through his microexpressions. Sometimes it’s played for comedy, sometimes it’s played for drama, but I noticed over time that when we felt tonally lost, we would just orient ourselves to what Matthew was playing.”

The Story Behind the Series
Dippold got the idea for the small-town setting from a trip to Marblehead, Massachusetts. “It wasn’t perfect. It’s just very cozy and lived in,” Dippold shared. “Big coffee mugs and old locals sitting at the counter in flannels, talking about their days. I didn’t want to leave. I just loved that feeling. We’re trying to capture that feeling: cozy, lived in, but there’s something lurking beneath the surface.”
She also took inspiration from a haunted house she visited as a child in New Jersey. “When I was a kid, I would go to the haunted house on the boardwalk in Long Branch, New Jersey. It was truly terrifying because they would chase you around,” Dippold said. “I would be excited all day. It was such a communal experience. We would all be screaming and laughing. That’s a feeling I have been trying to capture my whole life.”
The series makes references to classic horror movies like Jaws. But the creative team chose not to share all the influences so viewers can discover them while watching.
Widow’s Bay is set to start streaming on Apple TV+ from April 29, 2026. The show will be available for subscribers in over 100 countries, including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India.
