The Blue Bloods world continues with its new show Boston Blue, but one major face from the original series is not coming along for the ride. Tom Selleck, who played family patriarch and Police Commissioner Frank Reagan for 14 seasons, has made his position clear about appearing on the spinoff.
The 80-year-old actor recently opened up about his future with the franchise. While his on-screen son Donnie Wahlberg now leads the new CBS series, Selleck feels his time as Frank Reagan has naturally come to a close. He is also still processing the unexpected end of the original show, which finished its run in December 2024 after 293 episodes.
Tom Selleck’s Honest Answer About Boston Blue
Selleck did not give a vague or open-ended response when asked about joining Boston Blue. He shared his straightforward thoughts during an interview with Hour Detroit.
“I don’t know if I would do ‘Boston Blue.’ That’s another show,” Selleck said. He then explained why he is not rushing to return to the role that defined the last decade and a half of his career.
“I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure ‘Blue Bloods’ has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan,” he stated.
The actor values what the original series accomplished. He wants to protect that legacy rather than stretch the character into a new setting. For Selleck, the story of Frank Reagan ended when Blue Bloods aired its final episode.
Donnie Wahlberg Keeps the Door Open
Even though Selleck is hesitant, his former co-star and on-screen son Donnie Wahlberg remains hopeful. Wahlberg, who plays Detective Danny Reagan, is also an executive producer on Boston Blue.
Wahlberg confirmed that he spoke with Selleck before deciding to join the spinoff. He said Selleck has been very supportive of the new project.
“I can say, would I love for Tom to come up to Boston? Sure. Or would I love Danny to go to New York and visit Frank? Absolutely, yes,” Wahlberg told Parade. He understands that Selleck will only return if the story and material feel right.
“Tom’s always going to base his decisions on the work and material,” Wahlberg explained. “When the time comes, we will hopefully craft an idea that moves his heart and makes him want to do it.”
The Emotional Ending of Blue Bloods
The end of Blue Bloods was not easy for the cast. The show was still pulling in strong ratings when CBS decided to cancel it. Selleck has been open about his frustration with the network’s choice.
“It was a huge disappointment, and I still don’t know why CBS did it,” Selleck said. “If you get rid of the football, we were the sixth most popular series in all of television.”
He told TV Insider that the show was often “taken for granted because it performed from the get-go.” The sudden ending left the cast without the proper goodbye they expected.
Selleck remembered the strange feeling after filming the final scenes.
“I remember after the weekend [of the final episode’s shoot], I said, ‘I’ve got to get to bed early tonight because I have to do my dialogue for Monday.’ Well, there was no Monday. It’s just going to take a while,” he shared.
Moving Forward Without Frank Reagan
Boston Blue premiered in October 2025. The show follows Danny Reagan as he moves from the NYPD to the Boston Police Department. Mika Amonsen joins the cast as Danny’s son, Sean Reagan, taking over the role from Andrew Terraciano.
Several Blue Bloods cast members have already appeared on the spinoff. Bridget Moynahan (Erin Reagan) and Marisa Ramirez (Maria Baez) have made guest appearances. Len Cariou, who played Frank’s father Henry Reagan, also visited the new show.
But Selleck is focused on different types of projects. He told Parade that he wants to do a comedy or a Western.
“I want to sit on a horse again,” Selleck said. “I would love to do another comedy. The right kind of comedy.”
At 80 years old, Selleck has also changed his talent representation, moving from CAA to UTA. This move shows he plans to keep working, just not as Frank Reagan.
New Cast Member Teases Possible Cameo
Mika Amonsen, who plays Selleck’s on-screen grandson on Boston Blue, recently spoke about the cameo rumors. While he has never met Selleck personally, he confirmed that conversations about a possible appearance did happen.
“There’s a lot of fans that want to see it happen and there’s speculation,” Amonsen told Page Six. He added that people who worked closely with Selleck, like Donnie Wahlberg, have more influence in those decisions.
“I would just be happy he was there,” Amonsen said. “I know how much fans want him to be on the show.”

What This Means for Boston Blue
Boston Blue continues to air Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. The show has already been renewed for a second season. It has successfully carried forward the procedural format that made Blue Bloods a hit.
While Selleck’s physical presence may be missing, his influence on the character of Danny Reagan remains central to the plot. Wahlberg’s detective still carries the lessons and values taught by his father, Frank.
For now, fans who want to see Tom Selleck as Frank Reagan can watch all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods streaming on Paramount+.
