The final season of The Boys is finally here, and the first two episodes dropped on April 8, 2026, on Prime Video. The show wasted no time delivering shocking moments, including a major character death and a twist that changes everything about the virus storyline.
The Boys Season 5 picks up with Homelander ruling America as a dictator. Billy Butcher wants to use a virus that kills all Supes. But the second episode’s ending just turned that plan upside down.
Soldier Boy Rises From The Dead After Virus Exposure
The second episode, titled “Teenage Kix,” shows The Boys trying to kill members of a young superhero team. Their plan goes wrong, but they manage to infect Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) with the deadly virus.
The team watches as Soldier Boy appears to die. They put his body in a bag. But right at the end of the episode, Soldier Boy sits up with his eyes wide open.
This moment shocked viewers. The virus was supposed to kill every Supe it touched. But Soldier Boy survived.
Eric Kripke Explains The Virus Immunity
Showrunner Eric Kripke talked to TV Insider about what this means for The Boys Season 5. He confirmed that Soldier Boy is very much alive.
“Yes, it is true that Soldier Boy is not dead, and the reasons that he’s seemingly immune to this virus are what really set up the primary MacGuffin of the season. It really turns everything on its head.” – Eric Kripke
Kripke explained that this discovery creates a race between both sides. Homelander (Antony Starr) wants to get whatever made Soldier Boy survive. If he gets it, nobody can stop him. If The Boys get it first, the people they care about might live through the coming war.
How Soldier Boy Survived The Deadly Virus
The secret appears to be V1, the first version of Compound V. Soldier Boy was one of the earliest test subjects. He received the original formula from Frederick Vought during World War II.
Gen V Season 2 showed that V1 makes a person functionally immortal. Regular Compound V gives powers and some durability, but the newer versions don’t offer the same protection.
In the same sealed room where Soldier Boy got infected, two other Supes named Rock Hard and Jetstreak died quickly. This proves that Soldier Boy’s older biology protected him while newer Supes have no defense.
The Race For V1 Becomes The Main Story
The Boys Season 5 now centers on finding V1. Kripke said this becomes the driving force for the rest of the episodes.
If Homelander gets V1 and injects himself, he becomes truly unstoppable. He already controls the government and has the world under his thumb. Making himself immortal would mean his rule never ends.
If Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and The Boys get V1, they can protect the Supes they love. Characters like Starlight (Erin Moriarty) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) could survive the virus that Butcher wants to release.
Karl Urban spoke about this season in a December 2025 interview. He said Homelander’s goal is to become a god and rule the world. The only people who can stop him are Butcher and The Boys.
Homelander’s Dark Path This Season
Kripke also discussed where Homelander’s mind is at in The Boys Season 5. Even after taking over America, he remains miserable.
“It’s more about how, as Sage says to him, ‘Whatever power you accrue, it’s still not going to make you happy.’ And so we find Homelander begin the season, having achieved the upper echelon of power. There’s no more powerful person on the planet than what this guy has achieved, and he’s still miserable.” – Eric Kripke
Homelander starts hearing a voice he believes is God. This pushes him toward wanting to become a deity. Kripke said the season takes aim at Christian nationalism and how some politicians use religion to justify violent policies.
A-Train’s Death Shocks Fans Early
The first episode of The Boys Season 5 killed off A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) . Homelander snapped his neck after A-Train helped Starlight and others escape.
Kripke admitted he hated making that decision. He had to call Jessie T. Usher to break the news. The writers convinced him to kill a major character in the first episode so audiences would know nobody is safe for the rest of the season.
A-Train’s final moments showed him finally stopping his fear of Homelander. He saw Homelander as pathetic instead of scary and faced him head on.
Fan Reactions To The First Episodes
Social media lit up after the two-episode premiere. Fans had mixed feelings about the start of the final season.
Some viewers loved the action and surprises. One person wrote on X that The Boys Season 5 is already off to a better start than season four. Another called it a “banger start” with deaths, introductions, and action all delivered in two episodes.
Other fans felt confused about the virus twist. One post read, “This Soldier Boy favoritism is getting on my nerves, cause wdym the virus they’ve spent like THREE seasons on kills other supes but not him.”
A reviewer who watched seven episodes early said Homelander gets “darker than ever” this season. They promised a blood-soaked goodbye to many familiar faces.
