The hit Netflix show Bridgerton is currently filming its fifth season, and new casting news has fans talking. The upcoming season will focus on Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza) in a first-ever same-gender lead romance for the series. But the recent announcement of three new cast members also fixes a noticeable gap left by the previous season.

Season 4 followed Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and his love story with Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha). While audiences enjoyed their romance, one thing was missing from the ton. The show is famous for its charming, trouble-making bachelors known as “rakes.” Benedict, Anthony, and Colin all played this role before settling down. But after Benedict found love early in Season 4, there was no new rake to cause chaos in the marriage market.

A New Rake Named Christopher Anderson Joins the Ton

Netflix has officially announced that actor Tega Alexander will join the cast as Christopher Anderson. The character is described as a “Regency-era Casanova who could give the Bridgerton bachelors a run for their money.” He is the son of Lord Marcus Anderson, played by Daniel Francis, who had a secret romance with Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) in Season 4.

“Yet behind his cheeky facade lies a current of self-doubt that threatens to unravel him. The son of Lord Anderson will make his mark on society, one way or another…” – Netflix Tudum description of Christopher Anderson.

This addition is important because all the main Bridgerton men are now happily married or too young. Gregory Bridgerton is still a child. The show needed a new charming troublemaker to shake up the social season. Christopher Anderson will fill that spot perfectly, bringing back the fun energy of watching a handsome bachelor navigate the ton’s rules.

Two More Key Players Enter the Marriage Market

Alongside Alexander, two other actors have joined the cast for Season 5. Jacqueline Boatswain, known for her roles in Shameless and Grange Hill, will play Helen Stirling. She is described as Michaela’s mother and the source of her spirited personality. Netflix says she seeks to “guide — and occasionally push — her daughter through London’s social season, with equal measures vivaciousness and tough love.”

Gemma Knight Jones, who appeared in Paramount+’s MobLand, will play Lady Elizabeth Ashworth. Her character is an old friend of Michaela’s who acts as her confidante and guide to London. Beneath her playful charm lies a grounded realist who understands how high society really works.

Inside the Francesca and Michaela Love Story

Season 5 picks up two years after the death of John Stirling, Francesca’s husband. Francesca returns to London’s marriage market for practical reasons. But her plans change when Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza), John’s cousin, comes back to manage the family estate. The two women share a deep connection that grows into something more.

Showrunner Jess Brownell spoke about the importance of this storyline.

“I’ve said from the beginning that this show, in so many ways, is about allowing people to see themselves represented. It never felt right to not be inclusive of queer love as well within that fantasy.” – Jess Brownell, Bridgerton showrunner.

Brownell also promised that the season will focus on queer joy, not trauma. While there will be difficulties for the characters, the show will keep its signature fun and romantic tone.

Masali Baduza shared her excitement about the role.

“[We’re] super grateful and excited! What we really want to achieve is giving a realistic view of queer love onscreen and [giving them] a happily ever after.” – Masali Baduza.

What This Means for the Rest of the Bridgerton Family

The fifth season will continue to feature the larger Bridgerton family. Claudia Jessie returns as Eloise Bridgerton, who is expected to take the lead in Season 6. Florence Hunt and Will Tilston are back as Hyacinth and Gregory. Ruth Gemmell returns as Violet Bridgerton, who will likely deal with the arrival of Christopher Anderson, her former love interest’s son.

Nicola Coughlan’s Penelope Featherington gave up her Lady Whistledown role in Season 4. But the season finale revealed someone new has taken up the secret writer’s quill. That mystery will continue into Season 5.

Release Timeline

Bridgerton Season 5 is currently in production in the United Kingdom. Filming began in spring 2026. The new season is expected to arrive on Netflix sometime between 2027 and 2028. Season 4 is streaming now on Netflix for those who need to catch up.
