ADOR, the agency managing the popular girl group NewJeans, has filed an injunction with the Seoul Central District Court. This legal move aims to prevent NewJeans from entering into any advertising contracts or other agreements without ADOR’s approval, as reported on January 13. ADOR stated that this action is to “preserve the agency’s status.”
ADOR’s Stance on NewJeans’ Independent Activities
ADOR has made it clear that they will not allow NewJeans to independently sign advertising contracts or engage in advertising activities without their consent. The agency has expressed concerns about the group attempting to operate independently before officially separating from ADOR. The quintet, consisting of Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein, declared their intention to legally separate from ADOR, a subsidiary of HYBE Labels, at a press conference in late November of the previous year.
NewJeans has also filed a court appeal for legal separation from the agency; however, the initial hearing has not yet taken place. ADOR’s legal action is intended to prevent a situation where K-pop idols can simply terminate their contracts and pursue solo careers without addressing the legal implications.
In their statement, ADOR argued that allowing artists such freedom would “remove the incentive to invest in the entertainment industry, damaging the foundation of the K-pop industry and causing it to significantly shrink.” The agency presented their injunction appeal as a measure taken in good faith for the benefit of the entire K-pop industry. It is worth noting that NewJeans has been receiving numerous collaboration offers from various companies.
NewJeans’ Future Plans and ADOR’s Efforts
Reports indicate that ADOR has received advertising and project offers from external agencies for NewJeans. They have already finalized the group’s schedule for the current year, which includes releasing a new album and holding fan meetings. ADOR has also stated their desire to communicate with the NewJeans members to encourage them to reconsider their decision to terminate their contract with the agency.
