A new K-drama is showing the hard truth about K-pop fame. Netflix’s “Idol I” is more than a murder mystery. The show looks at the pressure, loss of privacy, and emotional cost of life as a Korean pop idol. The series mixes a legal thriller with a close look at the dark side of fan culture.

The story follows Maeng Se-na, a tough criminal lawyer who is secretly the biggest fan of the idol Do Ra-ik. When Ra-ik is accused of murdering his bandmate, Se-na becomes his lawyer. Their relationship changes from fan and idol to lawyer and client, and the show asks if it can become something more.

What “Idol I” Shows About an Idol’s Life

The drama uses its story to show problems that real K-pop stars face. From the first episode, Ra-ik’s life is not just glamorous. A fan, often called a “sasaeng,” runs from a crowd and grabs his jacket, making him fall. This kind of aggressive behavior from overstepping fans is a known issue in the industry.

The show also shows how little control idols have. In one powerful scene, Ra-ik breaks down in front of his agency’s CEO. He complains about fans who broke into his home. The CEO refuses to take legal action, wanting to avoid bad publicity. Ra-ik shouts that since he was ten years old, he has only done what he was told. He asks when he can finally say he is hurting. This moment feels very real and shows the human cost of maintaining a perfect image.

Kim Jae-young, the actor playing Do Ra-ik, talked about his role. He said, โ€œI thought of band idols like CNBLUE, F.T. Island, and Day6 while actingโ€ฆ Iโ€™ll be forty next year. I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ll be able to play an idol in dramas anymore. I really hope this project does wellโ€.

The Main Story: A Murder Case and a Changing Relationship

While showing idol life, “Idol I” is first a thriller. Do Ra-ik is the main suspect after his Gold Boys bandmate, Kang Woo-seong, is found dead at his home. Maeng Se-na must defend him, even as public opinion turns against him.

Their relationship is complicated. Se-na knows everything about Ra-ik as a fan but must now see him as a client. She promises to believe he is innocent. As they work together, Ra-ik starts to open up to her about his lonely childhood and the pressures of his job.

The case has many twists. Another band member, Choi Jae-hee, might have a false alibi. Ra-ik’s ex-girlfriend, Hong Hye-joo, is pulled into the case. By the end of episode four, Se-na and Ra-ik’s car is forced off the road, suggesting someone wants to hurt them.

Where to Watch and Upcoming Episodes

“Idol I” first airs on the Korean channel ENA every Monday and Tuesday at 10:00 PM Korea Standard Time (KST). It is then available for streaming on Netflix for international viewers.

The release on Netflix is different from most Netflix Originals. Because Netflix has licensing rights, new episodes are added weekly soon after they air in Korea, not all at once. This means global fans can follow the story almost in real time.

The drama has a total of 12 episodes, each about one hour long. The first four episodes aired in late December 2025. New episodes are released in pairs each week.

Here is the release schedule for the remaining episodes on Netflix:

  • Episodes 5 & 6: January 5-6, 2026
  • Episodes 7 & 8: January 12-13, 2026
  • Episodes 9 & 10: January 19-20, 2026
  • Episodes 11 & 12: January 26-27, 2026

For viewers around the world, new episodes typically appear on Netflix around 10:00 AM Eastern Time (ET) or 7:00 AM Pacific Time (PT) on the dates listed above. This corresponds to early evening hours in Europe and late night in Australia.

The drama stars Choi Soo-young as lawyer Maeng Se-na. Soo-young is a real K-pop idol from the famous group Girls’ Generation, which adds depth to her role. Playing the idol Do Ra-ik is actor and model Kim Jae-young.
