A small horror movie with a tiny budget is turning into a massive box office success story. Curry Barker’s directorial debut Obsession has earned over ₹9 crore in India within just four days of its release.
The film collected ₹2 crore on its first Monday (June 1). While this is a small drop from the weekend numbers, such a dip is normal for a weekday. The movie now stands at an India net collection of ₹9.75 crore and a gross collection of ₹11.52 crore.
How Obsession Performed Over Its Opening Weekend
The film hit Indian theaters on May 29 and has shown steady growth each day. Here is the day-by-day breakdown of its India box office performance:
- Day 1 (Friday, May 29): ₹1.75 crore
- Day 2 (Saturday, May 30): ₹2.75 crore
- Day 3 (Sunday, May 31): ₹3.25 crore
- Day 4 (Monday, June 1): ₹2 crore
The Sunday collection was the highest single-day haul so far. The movie is now playing on over 1,300 screens across India, up from its initial 900 screens, because of strong demand from horror fans.
A Massive Success Against a Tiny Budget
Obsession was made on a reported budget of less than $1 million (around ₹8 crore). The film has already earned $148 million worldwide. That is nearly 150 times its production cost.
The movie is now the highest-grossing film in Focus Features history. It is competing closely with another horror hit, Backrooms, which has made $118 million globally. Both films are debut features from young directors who started on YouTube.
What is Obsession About?
The film follows Bear (played by Michael Johnston), a shy music store worker who has a crush on his coworker Nikki (played by Inde Navarrette). When he cannot tell her how he feels, he buys a magical toy that grants wishes. He wishes for Nikki to fall in love with him. The wish comes true, but the results are terrifying.
The movie is not a simple ghost story. Critics say it is a smart commentary on how some men fail to understand consent and women’s freedom.
Horror has always been a genre that is more political than the rest. Obsession is the next logical step in that progression. The film is a heightened retelling of how men – even the ones who think they are all things nice – fail to understand consent, autonomy, and the free will of a woman.
Critical Response and Audience Reactions
Hindustan Times gave the film a perfect 5-star rating. The review praised Inde Navarrette‘s performance, calling it the best acting of the year so far. The review also noted that the film shows “how the scariest monster is often a man who refuses to respect a woman.”
The movie had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It is produced by Focus Features with Blumhouse founder Jason Blum serving as an executive producer.

Beating Bollywood Competition
On Monday, Obsession collected more money than the Bollywood film Chand Mera Dil starring Lakshya and Ananya Panday. That film, now in its second week, earned only 78 lakhs on the same day.
The success of Obsession shows that Indian audiences are excited about fresh, smart horror stories. The film has connected with viewers who want something different from usual scary movies.
