The biographical film about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has found a new home. Independent studio Neon has picked up the project called Artificial after Amazon MGM Studios decided to step away from its release. This move comes after Amazon invested billions of dollars into Altman’s artificial intelligence company.

Neon announced on Tuesday that it acquired the film following a bidding process. The studio plans to release Artificial later this year and aims to compete in the Oscar race. The film was near completion with a budget of about $40 million when Amazon dropped it.

Amazon’s exit from the project surprised many in Hollywood. The company had spent a year developing the film and had seen every version of the script before director Luca Guadagnino joined. Amazon said in a statement that the film would be “better served if it were released by a different studio” and that they were working to find it a new distributor.

“We have the utmost respect and admiration for Luca Guadagnino as an award-winning filmmaker โ€“ not to mention a longstanding relationship that we hope to continue,” Amazon said in its statement.

Amazon’s Multi-Billion Dollar OpenAI Partnership Creates Conflict

The timing of Amazon’s decision raised questions about business conflicts. In February 2026, Amazon announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI that includes up to $50 billion in investment. The deal starts with $15 billion immediately, with another $35 billion coming later when certain conditions are met.

The two companies also signed a $38 billion cloud computing agreement last year. Under this deal, OpenAI agreed to use Amazon Web Services and chips designed by Amazon.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Sam Altman have a personal friendship. Altman attended Bezos’ wedding in Venice last year. This connection made the studio’s decision even more noticeable in the entertainment industry.

What Artificial Is About

Artificial tells the story of the dramatic week in November 2023 when OpenAI’s board fired Altman as CEO and then reinstated him days later. The film is written by Simon Rich, a writer known for his work on Saturday Night Live.

The movie has been compared to The Social Network for the AI era. According to reports, the film shows Altman and Elon Musk as the characters audiences would like the least. The movie focuses on the power struggle inside OpenAI and who gets to control AI technology.

The film finished production last autumn and was in the final stages of post-production. Amazon had originally planned a limited awards-season release in late 2026 before a wider rollout in early 2027. That plan changed when the studio decided to walk away.

Star-Studded Cast Led by Andrew Garfield

Andrew Garfield stars as Sam Altman in the film. This is not the first time Garfield has played a tech founder. He also starred in The Social Network as Eduardo Saverin, the co-founder of Facebook.

The cast includes several well-known actors:

  • Ike Barinholtz plays Elon Musk
  • Monica Barbaro plays former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati
  • Yura Borisov plays OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever
  • Mark Rylance appears in a supporting role
  • Other cast members include Jason Schwartzman, Billie Lourd, Chris O’Dowd, and Cooper Hoffman

Barinholtz prepared for his role as Musk by watching many interviews with the Tesla CEO. He told Variety that he didn’t want to meet Musk before filming. The actor called Guadagnino a “real genius” who brings out the best in actors.

Neon Steps In to Save the Project

Several major studios passed on Artificial after Amazon dropped it. Netflix, A24, and Focus Features all chose not to pursue the project after screenings organized by CAA Media Finance. Mubi also showed interest but did not secure the rights.

Neon has a strong track record with awards season films. The independent distributor backed Oscar winners like Parasite and Anora. The studio has also supported the last seven Palme d’Or winners at the Cannes Film Festival. Neon did not say how much it paid for the worldwide rights to the film.

“The acquisition underscores Neon’s commitment to partnering with visionary filmmakers, and bringing ambitious cinema to audiences around the world,” the studio said in a statement.

Behind the Scenes Drama

The decision to drop the film came from Mike Hopkins, the head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. According to Puck, Hopkins watched a cut of the movie that was “markedly darker” in tone than the original script.

Test screenings for the film were reportedly positive. The movie works as a story, but the portrayal of Altman and Musk created problems for Amazon given their business relationship with OpenAI.

The film reportedly portrays Altman in a less favorable light. Some sources described the character as a “pathological liar”. Ilya Sutskever, who voted to remove Altman, is reportedly shown as a more sympathetic figure in the story.

Other studios had previously passed on the project. Warner Bros and Paramount both said no to Rich’s script last year over concerns it was “dull” before Amazon picked it up.

What This Means for the Film’s Release

Neon has not announced a specific release date for Artificial. The studio plans to release the film later this year and compete for Oscars.

The movie had been targeting a SXSW premiere before Amazon’s withdrawal. That plan is now off the table as Neon works on a new release strategy.

Joe Russo, a filmmaker, said Amazon’s move made Artificial “one of the most important movies of the decade”. The situation has sparked conversations about whether films critical of tech giants can find major studio support.

Luca Guadagnino has worked with Amazon MGM Studios multiple times before. He directed Challengers for the studio and also made After the Hunt with them. Both films were well received, making this situation unusual for the director.

The film’s nearly completed status means Neon can move quickly toward release. The budget of $40 million shows it is a significant production with high production values. With Neon’s awards season experience, the film has a clear path forward after a period of uncertainty.
