The new Korean drama Perfect Crown arrived with huge expectations, but the first episodes have created a surprising split among viewers. The show, which brings together Byeon Woo-seok from the hit series Lovely Runner and singer-actress IU from When Life Gives You Tangerines, has become a hot topic for both its strong ratings and the mixed reactions to the lead performances. While the drama is pulling in solid numbers, some audience members are speaking out about what they see as problems with the main actors’ delivery and chemistry.
Strong Ratings and High Expectations for the New Drama
Perfect Crown officially released its first two episodes on April 10, 2026 on MBC and is also streaming on Disney+ for global audiences. The show is available to watch in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and many other countries through the streaming platform.
The drama recorded a nationwide rating of 7.8% for its first episode, which grew to 9.5% for the second episode, securing the top spot in its Friday-Saturday time slot for two weeks in a row. The production team also shared that the show was selected by Time magazine as one of the ‘2026 Most Anticipated Korean Dramas,’ and all advertising slots were sold out before the premiere due to high interest from advertisers.
The 12-episode series is set in an alternate version of South Korea where a constitutional monarchy still exists. IU plays Seong Hui-ju, a wealthy chaebol heiress who becomes frustrated with her commoner status. Byeon Woo-seok takes on the role of Grand Prince Yi An, a royal who holds a title but has little real power and struggles with his position as the king’s son.
Viewers Point Out Issues with Both Lead Actors
Despite the strong start in ratings, online reactions have been far from united. Many viewers have expressed disappointment with the acting performances, with criticism directed at both IU and Byeon Woo-seok.
Regarding Byeon Woo-seok, some watchers described his performance as flat and lacking emotional range. Comments such as “It feels like an AI reading mode” and “His expressions are hard to read, making immersion difficult” have appeared across social media platforms. Others noted that his dialogue delivery feels monotone, with one viewer writing, “The male actor’s expressions, even his smile, look awkward. His acting tone and way of speaking are all too uniform. There’s no variety or depth at all”.
IU has also faced unexpected criticism, with some viewers comparing her performance unfavorably to her previous work. Comments included, “She’s just like Jang Man-wol from Hotel Del Luna,” and “It feels like she’s forcing herself into clothes that don’t suit her”. Some watchers described her acting as “too exaggerated,” saying she looks like she is forcing the character instead of naturally becoming it.
“The female lead is too overdone, and the male lead is stiff… it was a highly anticipated drama, but I dropped it halfway through episode 2.” – Viewer comment on online forum
One specific clip that went viral showed Byeon Woo-seok acting alongside another cast member, leading a viewer to post: “Gong Seung-yeon moving every muscle in her face then there’s Byeon Woo-seok daydreaming. The acting gap is a pain to watch”. This phrase, “a pain to watch,” quickly spread across fan communities as a common reaction to the show’s early episodes.
Some Viewers Defend the Performances and Ask for Patience
Not everyone agrees with the negative feedback. A number of viewers have come forward to defend both actors, pointing out that the show is only in its early stages and that more time is needed for the story and characters to fully develop.
Some online comments include, “It’s still the early stages of the drama, so it can be awkward,” and “Weren’t people’s expectations too high? It’s sufficiently entertaining”. Other viewers have described Byeon Woo-seok’s performance as “okay” and urged others to give the series more time as it progresses.
On review platforms like IMDb, the show currently holds a rating of 8.7/10 based on early user reviews. Some reviewers praised Byeon Woo-seok’s presence, writing, “Byeon Woo-seok shines as the Grand Prince, delivering a performance full of presence and charisma. He fits the role perfectly and portrays the character with great depth”. Others complimented IU’s work, stating, “IU is absolutely magnetic in this role — there’s no comparison to any of her previous characters. Her portrayal feels fresh and unique”.

Chemistry Between the Leads Becomes a Major Talking Point
The on-screen connection between Byeon Woo-seok and IU has also become a central topic of discussion. Some viewers feel the two actors do not blend well together, with one comment stating, “the male lead just acts so badly that it makes the female leads look worse too”. Others have noted that the contrast between the two acting styles makes certain scenes feel awkward or disconnected.
However, supporters of the show argue that the characters are meant to start off distant and disconnected, as the story follows a contract marriage between two people from very different worlds. They believe the chemistry will build naturally as the plot moves forward and the characters grow closer.
Perfect Crown is directed by Park Joon-hwa and Bae Hee-young, with a screenplay by Yoo Ji-won. The show has 12 episodes in total and will continue airing weekly on MBC every Friday and Saturday, with new episodes also arriving on Disney+ for international viewers. The third and fourth episodes are scheduled to release on April 17 and 18, 2026.
Despite the divided opinions on the acting, IU and Byeon Woo-seok still hold the first and second spots in Good Data Corporation’s drama actor popularity rankings, showing that audience interest in the show and its stars remains very high.
