The South Korean drama Island arrived on TVING in December 2022 and quickly became a favorite for fans of fantasy and action. The show brings together a group of unlikely heroes fighting evil forces on the beautiful island of Jeju. Based on a popular webcomic by Yoon In-wan and Yang Kyung-il, the series mixes Korean mythology with modern day monster hunting. The show is also available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video in more than 240 countries around the world.

The story follows Won Mi-ho, a rich heiress who gets sent to Jeju Island after a big scandal. She soon finds herself hunted by demons. Two very different men come to her aid. One is a mysterious demon hunter named Van. The other is a young Catholic priest named Johan who performs exorcisms. Together, they must uncover an ancient secret and save the world from total destruction. While the first part of the series ended in early 2023, fans are still eager to see if a sequel will happen.

The Main Cast Who Brought Island to Life

The drama features a star-studded lineup. Kim Nam-gil, Lee Da-hee, Cha Eun-woo, and Sung Joon lead the cast. Each actor brings a unique energy to their character, making the fight between good and evil deeply personal.

Kim Nam-gil as Van

Kim Nam-gil plays Van, a man who lives his life as a weapon. He was trained harshly to destroy the demons that threaten humans. Van is a complex figure. He is half-human and half-demon. He usually shows no emotion when he kills, but he carries a lot of guilt inside him. He shares a connection with Mi-ho from her past life. Because of this, he vows to protect her even though he is tired of his immortal life. Kim Nam-gil is known for his strong roles in dramas like The Fiery Priest and Through the Darkness. His performance as the sad and strong Van was a major reason the show worked so well.

Lee Da-hee as Won Mi-ho

Lee Da-hee takes the role of Won Mi-ho. She starts as a spoiled chaebol heiress. After causing big trouble, her father sends her to Jeju Island to teach at a high school. She is arrogant at first. But as demons begin to hunt her, she discovers she is the reincarnation of a powerful figure named Wonjeong. Lee Da-hee shows Mi-ho’s growth from a selfish rich girl into a brave woman who accepts her destiny. Viewers might recognize Lee Da-hee from Search: WWW or as the host of the popular dating show Single’s Inferno.

Cha Eun-woo as Priest Johan

Cha Eun-woo, a member of the K-pop group Astro, plays Priest Johan. He is a Vatican-approved exorcist who comes to Jeju with headphones around his neck and a unique way of fighting evil. People do not take him seriously because he looks young and listens to K-pop while working. But he has real power. Johan is bright and funny on the outside, but the drama reveals he has a sad and dark past. Cha Eun-woo is best known for his lead roles in True Beauty and Gangnam Beauty. In Island, he moves away from romantic leads to show a more action-packed and emotional side.

Sung Joon as Gungtan

Sung Joon plays Gungtan, the main villain of the series. He was once a friend and brother figure to Van. Both were turned into demons together. But while Van chooses to protect humans, Gungtan chooses the path of revenge and destruction. He holds a grudge against the world and wants to let evil spirits loose. Sung Joon gives a powerful performance as the angry and betrayed Gungtan. His long grey hair and intense stare make him a memorable villain. He has appeared in dramas like The Fiery Priest 2 and Can This Love Be Translated?.

Supporting Characters Who Added Depth to the Story

The main heroes did not fight alone. A strong supporting cast helped build the world of Island.

Choi Tae-joon made a special appearance as Kang Chan-hee, Johan’s brother. His character plays a big part in showing why Johan decided to become a priest. Kim Sung-oh played Yul, an exorcist who helps the group in their final battle.

“The three form one team, however an unexpected blast from the past strikes them as Van’s childhood friend-turned-foe Gung Tan announces his return.” – Pinkvilla on the core conflict of Island.
