The Yellowstone universe is growing with Marshals, a new CBS show following Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton after the original series ended. But fans want to know: where is Taylor Sheridan in all of this?
The creator of Yellowstone is known for writing every episode of his hit shows. Marshals breaks that tradition. Spencer Hudnut, who worked on SEAL Team, serves as showrunner and creator of this spin-off. Sheridan is an executive producer but not writing the show. This marks the first Yellowstone franchise series not written directly by Sheridan.

Sheridan Serves As Support System Not Daily Writer
Hudnut recently opened up about what it was like working with the famous creator. He admitted feeling very nervous pitching his ideas to Sheridan.
โWhenever youโre pitching someone, you want to be the best writer in the conversation. If you have a better writer with you, you want them to be next to you, not across from you. So the idea of telling him what his character that he created should do next was a little scary.โ
The conversation happened before the Yellowstone finale aired. Hudnut did not know how Kayceโs story ended at first. Sheridan told him, โYouโll see next week. Heโs perfectly at peace.โ This made it harder to restart Kayceโs journey.

Despite the pressure, Sheridan was supportive. Hudnut explained that during the pitch, Sheridan took his ideas and reshaped them in about three minutes. โThat was really annoying, because I had been working on it for, like, six months,โ Hudnut joked.
For the day-to-day production, Sheridan stayed mostly in the background. Hudnut told TV Insider that Sheridan was not there every day.
โHe was not there daily. I probably would not be sitting here if that was the case. When we needed him, he was always there for us and his fingerprints are all over the whole thing, the world he created, the characters and his overall influence.โ
Luke Grimes confirmed this. He said Sheridan gave his support publicly and privately. โKnowing that we had his support and then hearing the idea and it actually being a really good idea got me really excited to do it,โ Grimes shared.

How The Show Handles Major Yellowstone Changes
Marshals premiered on March 1, 2026, on CBS. The show picks up one year after Yellowstone ended. Kayce and his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) are dealing with a huge loss. Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille) died of cancer between the two shows.
This was not Hudnutโs original plan. He explained that Asbille was not available for the spin-off. โIf sheโs not available for this, then whatโs the best way to move on from that character in the least exploitive way?โ he told The Hollywood Reporter.
The show uses Monicaโs death to highlight real health problems facing Native American communities. Hudnut said, โIt felt important to use her passing as an opportunity to really shine a spotlight on an issue that is plaguing that community, which is a very high cancer rate.โ
Grimes said this painful event was the only way to bring Kayce back. โWhat are we going to do, watch him be happy? Thatโs pretty boring,โ he recalled thinking.

Marshals is different from other Sheridan shows because it airs on CBS, not just Paramount+. The cast includes Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, and Tatanka Means. Returning characters from Yellowstone include Mo Brings Plenty as Mo and Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater.
The show received a second season renewal in March 2026, even before the first season finished airing. CBS executives showed strong confidence in the project.
Grimes also stepped into a producer role for the first time. โItโs actually been really cool to be a little closer to the magic. Itโs like going to film school for me right now. Iโm learning a lot,โ he said.
Marshals airs Sundays at 8/7c on CBS and streams on Paramount+. New episodes drop every Monday on SkyShowtime for international audiences.
