The latest trailer for The Boroughs is here, and it shows that retirement life comes with a serious monster problem. The upcoming Netflix sci-fi drama from the creators of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and executive producers the Duffer Brothers (Stranger Things) has given fans a closer look at the strange creatures hiding in the New Mexico desert. The full trailer, released on May 4, 2026, reveals that a group of elderly heroes must fight for more than just a quiet life.

Something Monstrous Is Hiding in a Perfect Desert Town

The series takes place in a beautiful retirement community in the New Mexico desert. The place looks perfect on the outside, with sunny weather, green lawns, and nice houses. But something dangerous is moving through the streets at night.

Alfred Molina plays Sam Cooper, a man who just lost his wife and has to move to The Boroughs. He does not want to be there. He thinks the slogan “you’ll have the time of your life” is a bad joke for a place where people go to wait for the end. But soon, he faces something much worse than boredom.

The new trailer shows Sam waking up to find a creature in his room. The monster has a strange, hand-like shape with long fingers. Another scene shows a giant creature moving outside the homes. The other residents tell Sam to run. One character says death is the real monster, but the trailer makes it clear the physical monsters are just as terrifying.

The Unlikely Hero Group Comes Together

Sam does not fight alone. He finds help from a group of residents who, like him, feel ignored and forgotten. Geena Davis plays Renee, a former journalist with sharp instincts. Alfre Woodard plays Judy, a person looking for spiritual answers. Denis O‘Hare is Wally, a music manager who does not trust easily. Clarke Peters plays Art, a doctor who is running out of time and options. Bill Pullman also stars as Jack, another member of the group.

The Duffers said this show keeps the same spirit as Stranger Things. The main difference is the heroes ride golf carts instead of bikes. But the feeling of a group of misfits coming together to fight a dark secret is the same.

Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, who created the show, explained their idea simply. Addiss said he always loved drawing monsters as a child. Matthews started planning his retirement when he was very young. So a show about retirees fighting monsters was the perfect mix of their interests.

The creators made sure not to make jokes about aging. They treat the characters with respect. The show asks a serious question: “What will you do with the time you have left?” Because these characters have less time ahead of them, the danger feels even more intense.

What Fans Are Saying About the New Trailer

Fans on social media are excited about the cast and the strange idea. Many are calling it “Stranger Things with older people” or “AARP Stranger Things.” One user on YouTube wrote, “Oh wow, what a cast! It‘s like Stranger Things with a gang of AARP members.” Another said, “Elderly Stranger Things… I’m here for it!” after seeing the monster designs.

Some viewers noticed that the creatures look similar to the monsters in the Upside Down from Stranger Things. While there is no official connection between the two shows, the visual style is clearly influenced by the Duffers‘ work. The final trailer has only increased curiosity about what the dark secret of The Boroughs actually is.

Release Date and Streaming Details

The Boroughs will release all eight episodes on May 21, 2026. It will be available to stream on Netflix. For viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and other regions, the show will drop at midnight Pacific Time on the release date.

The series is produced by the Duffer Brothers’ company, Upside Down Pictures. Ben Taylor, known for Sex Education, directed the first two episodes and serves as an executive producer.
