The entertainment world is talking about a tense moment at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. Actor Adam Driver was asked about serious claims made by his former Girls co-star Lena Dunham. In her recent memoir, Famesick, Dunham accused Driver of being physically rough and verbally aggressive while filming the hit HBO show.

When a reporter brought up the topic during a press conference for his new movie Paper Tiger, Driver did not stay quiet. Instead, he gave a short, sharp answer that surprised many in the room.

Driver Jokes About Writing His Own Memoir

The 42-year-old actor was promoting his crime thriller at the festival. He stood alongside co-stars Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller. A journalist asked Driver about the claims in Dunham’s book.

Driver’s response was immediate. “I have no comment on any of that,” he said. He then added, with a hint of sarcasm, “I’m saving it all for my book.” The comment drew laughter from the press and other attendees.

This was the first time Driver spoke publicly about the memoir. Until that moment, he had remained silent about the book, which was released just a few weeks ago.

What Lena Dunham Wrote About Adam Driver

To understand why this question was asked, we have to look at Lena Dunham’s memoir Famesick. The book contains several stories about their time working together on Girls. The show ran for six seasons and ended in 2017. Dunham wrote, directed, and starred in the series, while Driver played her on-and-off boyfriend, Adam Sackler.

One of the most talked-about claims involves filming their first intimate scene. Dunham wrote that careful planning for the scene “went out the window.” She claimed that Driver “hurled me this way and that” during the performance.

She wrote that she felt stunned and unsure of what had happened. “It wasn’t that I felt violated,” Dunham explained in the book. However, she admitted she felt she had lost control of the scene as the director. She added a very frank line about her fears during the moment, stating she worried she might suddenly find herself in a 1970s adult film.

Details of the Chair Incident

The book does not stop at the intimate scene. Dunham also recalled a rehearsal incident. She says she forgot her lines while practicing in her trailer late one night. According to her account, Driver became frustrated.

She wrote that he screamed an expletive at her to say something. Then, she claims, he hurled a chair at the wall next to her. She quoted him as yelling at her to “wake the f**k up” because he was sick of watching her stare.

Despite these stories, Dunham did not describe Driver as purely a villain. She wrote that he could be “short-tempered and verbally aggressive” and physically imposing. However, she also added that he could be “protective, loving even.” She also noted that while Driver once told her he would “always love” her when the show ended, she “never heard from him again” after the series wrapped.

Contradicting Past Interviews

The situation is made more complex by Driver’s past words. In a 2017 interview with Larry King, Driver spoke very highly of Dunham. He praised her creative process.

“I love it,” Driver said at the time. “She’s very specific in her writing and she’s very open with creating a space for everyone to try anything they want.” He called the set of Girls the “best kind of great working environment.”

Those past comments differ greatly from the atmosphere Dunham describes in her new memoir. Driver did not address this change in his recent statement at Cannes.

Focus Shifts to ‘Paper Tiger’ at Cannes

Driver was at the film festival to work. He stars in Paper Tiger, directed by James Gray. The movie is competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or award. It is one of the few American films in the main competition this year.

The movie received a seven-minute standing ovation after its premiere at the festival. The crime drama also features Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller. Driver’s remark about “saving it for his book” was a brief interruption in an otherwise professional press tour focused on the film.
