Prime Video dropped the official trailer for Elle, the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series, on June 8, 2026. The two-minute footage shows a 15-year-old Elle Woods (played by Lexi Minetree) leaving her comfortable life in Bel-Air, Los Angeles, after her father gets a job transfer. She lands in Seattle in 1995, right at the height of the grunge movement, and quickly realizes that her pink wardrobe and confident attitude do not work in her new city.
The eight-episode first season arrives on July 1, 2026, on Prime Video in more than 240 countries, including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India. The streaming service already renewed the show for a second season, with production scheduled to begin in spring 2026.
Elle Woods Faces a Brutal Welcome at Her New Seattle High School
The trailer opens with Elle saying goodbye to her sunny LA life. She leaves behind friends, her beloved pool, and the neighborhood where everyone knows her name. Her optimism follows her to Seattle, but her new classmates do not welcome her with open arms.
When Elle sits down at a lunch table, one student looks at her and says, “LA? Yeah, that explains it.” Elle asks what is wrong with Los Angeles, and everyone around her starts laughing. The scene makes it clear that her new peers see her as a shallow outsider who does not belong.
Elle calls her friends back in LA and admits, “I feel like I don’t even speak the same language as them.” Her friends offer a simple solution: “Get fluent in Seattle.” Elle takes that advice seriously and tries to change herself. She throws away her pink clothes and puts on a Nirvana t‑shirt. She straightens her signature wavy hair. She tries to blend in, but nothing works.
The trailer captures the same fish‑out‑of‑water feeling that made the original 2001 film so popular. Instead of Harvard Law School, Elle now fights to survive high school in a city that values flannel shirts and grunge music over designer dresses and confidence.
“In Season One, Elle follows Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film.” – Official Prime Video synopsis
Lexi Minetree Steps Into Elle’s Pink Shoes
Lexi Minetree, a newcomer with small roles in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and The Murdaugh Murders, takes on the pressure of playing a younger version of the character that Reese Witherspoon made famous. Witherspoon personally announced Minetree’s casting in an Instagram video and called the moment one of the most gratifying experiences of her career.
Witherspoon serves as an executive producer through her company Hello Sunshine. She told Extra in a recent interview that she would “love to do” another Legally Blonde movie, calling Elle Woods her “superhero” and her “Marvel character.” She added that any new film would need to be “perfect” before she commits.
The supporting cast includes June Diane Raphael as Elle’s mother Eva Woods, a polished woman who likes to keep things picture‑perfect. Tom Everett Scott plays her father Wyatt Woods. Chandler Kinney, Jacob Moskovitz, Gabrielle Policano, and Zac Looker play Elle’s new classmates. James Van Der Beek appears as Dean Wilson.
How ‘Elle’ Connects to the Original Legally Blonde Movies
The show takes place years before Elle enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex‑boyfriend Warner Huntington III. The first Legally Blonde movie came out in 2001 and turned Reese Witherspoon into a household name. The film earned over $141 million worldwide against a budget of just $18 million. A sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, followed in 2003.
A third movie has been stuck in development for years, with Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor attached to write the script at different points. Witherspoon told The Graham Norton Show in early 2025 that she still wants to return to the character. “It just has to be perfect,” she said.
The idea for a high school prequel came to Witherspoon while watching Netflix’s Wednesday series. She told Jimmy Fallon in January 2025 that she loved the show and thought, “We should do Elle Woods in high school.” She wanted to show who Elle was before college and law school.
The trailer hints that Elle eventually uses her skills to help other students. A group of classmates asks for her help gathering proof against their principal. Elle takes charge and works to become a real member of her new community. The show also explores her relationship with her parents as she leans on them for support during this difficult move.
Jason Moore, who directed Pitch Perfect, helmed the first two episodes. The series comes from creator Laura Kittrell (High School, Insecure), who serves as co‑showrunner alongside Caroline Dries. Production companies include Hello Sunshine, Marc Platt Productions, Reunion Pacific Entertainment, MGM Television, and Amazon MGM Studios.
