The Boroughs has been canceled after just one season on Netflix, leaving fans with a host of unanswered questions and a major missed plot opportunity. The sci-fi series, executive produced by Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, was axed due to soft viewership numbers that failed to justify its expensive production costs.
The news comes as a shock because there had been active discussions about renewing the show. According to Deadline, a Season 2 writers’ room had already been opened, and there were even plans to film the second and third seasons back-to-back. Those plans are now reportedly scrapped entirely.
Why Netflix Canceled The Boroughs
The decision came down to the numbers. The Boroughs premiered on May 6, 2026, to strong critical acclaim, scoring an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. But the viewership told a different story.
The series opened with a modest 5.6 million views in its debut weekend. While that number climbed to 9.5 million in its first full week, it then plummeted to 3.7 million the following week. This sharp decline signaled weak long-term growth potential, which is a major factor in Netflix’s renewal decisions.
The high price tag also played a decisive role. The show required elaborate special effects for its otherworldly storyline, and its all-star castโincluding Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, and Bill Pullmanโmade production expensive. Netflix weighs such costs against raw viewership data when deciding whether to continue a series.
The Missed Plot Opportunity and Unanswered Questions
The cancellation is particularly frustrating because the first season left several major mysteries unresolved. The showrunners, Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, had planned to expand on these in future seasons.
What Is Mother’s True Origin?
The central creature, Mother, remained a mystery throughout Season 1. While the show revealed that Marcus and his wife Anneliese discovered Mother in 1949 and that drinking her blood kept them young, the creature’s actual origins were never explained.
Addiss revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that they had a clear plan for this reveal:
“I’ll say that we know what Mother is exactly, and the answer to that question is the arc of multiple seasons, hopefully. That is at the root of it all. So we’re not going to say what it is, but we know, and we hope the audience gets to find out.”
That opportunity is now gone.
What Is Sam’s Connection to Mother?
Another major loose end involves Sam’s mysterious glitching in the Season 1 finale. After Sam helped free Mother, and she exploded, his reflection glitched like television static in the mirror. This was an intriguing tease for Season 2, hinting at a deeper connection between Sam and Mother.
The creators had a specific plan for this development:
“There’s a lot in the show about transmission and signals: the signal that Mother puts out, the voices that Sam’s hearing, the glitching. So it was not done idly. Everything about it is very specific, and it sets up what we imagined to be the next chapter of the adventure.”
What Is the Secret Behind the Cave Tree?
The magical, glowing peach tree inside the underground cave known as the “Cave of Wonders” was central to the show’s mythology. While Season 1 revealed that the tree was connected to Mother and that its fruit could briefly grant youth and heal ailments, its true origins and lore remain unknown.
The creators had written many versions addressing the cave tree’s lore, which were eventually dropped from the first season. They had planned to explore this fully in Season 2.
What Happens to the Boroughs Staff?
With the death of Mother and the absence of her blood, the fate of the retirement home’s staff remains uncertain. The series hinted at their tragic fates in Hank’s last words, but the full extent of what happened to them will never be revealed.

What the Showrunners Had Planned
Addiss and Matthews had a clear vision for the show’s future. In an interview with Netflix Tudum, they revealed that the glitching mirror scene was a “loving homage” to Stranger Things, designed to tease the direction of Season 2. The Duffer Brothers themselves approved of the nod.
The showrunners also had plans to expand on Mother’s lore. “You have no idea what Mother is,” Blaine tells Sam in the finale, adding “What she’s capable of.” This was meant to set up a larger mythology that will now never be explored.
What This Means for the Duffer Brothers
The cancellation comes roughly six weeks after the Duffer Brothers departed Netflix for a rich film and TV deal at Paramount. This leaves Netflix with only one Duffer Brothers-related property: the animated series Stranger Things: Tales from ’85.
The first season of The Boroughs is still available to stream in full on Netflix in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and India. For fans of the show, the unanswered questions will remain just that.
