Netflix has started production on Black Doves Season 2, the spy thriller starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw. The streaming platform confirmed that cameras are rolling in and around London for the sophomore season. The show received an early renewal in August 2024, months before the first season premiered in December of that year.

The first season became a major hit for Netflix, earning a 91% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and amassing 59.4 million hours viewed during its debut week. The series follows Helen Webb, a spy working for a secret organization called the Black Doves, who has infiltrated the highest levels of British government by marrying a politician.

New Cast Members Join Season 2

The second season brings several new faces to the spy thriller. Neve Campbell from the Scream franchise joins the cast as Cecile Mason. Ambika Mod from One Day and Black Bag plays Laila, described as an “acerbic and anarchic Black Doves agent sent to help Helen on a mission.”

Babou Ceesay from Alien: Earth portrays Mr. Conteh, a “Black Doves executive with suspicious motivations.” Sam Riley from Maleficent: Mistress of Evil plays Patrick, an “emissary from a mysterious organization who offers Sam a lifeline.” Additional cast members include Sylvia Hoeks as Katia Chernov, Goran Kostic as Alexi Chernov, and Samuel Barnett as Jerry.

Returning cast members include Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw, Sarah Lancashire, Andrew Buchan, Kathryn Hunter, Ella Lily Hyland, Gabrielle Creevy, Agnes O’Casey, and Molly Chesworth.

What to Expect in Black Doves Season 2

Season 2 picks up after the events of the first season. Helen’s husband Wallace (Andrew Buchan) is preparing to become Prime Minister, making her double life as a spy even more dangerous. Her handler Mrs. Reed (Sarah Lancashire) gets caught up in a plot to undermine her position within the Black Doves organization.

Helen reunites with her best friend Sam (Ben Whishaw), who is now working low-rate hits and drinking alone in Soho bars. The official synopsis states that loyalties will be weaponized, trust will be shattered, and the fight to protect the people they love could cost everything.

“I couldn’t be more excited to delve back into the world of our murderous little spy family. To have so many of our amazing cast returning and also being able to add some of my absolute favourite actors into the mix is such a great joy. Downing Street will never be the same again.”

Potential Release Date

Netflix has not announced an official release date for Black Doves Season 2. Filming began in November 2025, and production is expected to run for approximately 20 weeks. Based on the timeline of the first season, which premiered about a year after filming started, a release in late 2026 seems likely.

Series creator Joe Barton has mentioned that the show might move away from its Christmas setting, saying it would be “interesting to see them out of their winter coats.” This suggests the new season could release at a different time of year, possibly in late 2026 without a holiday theme.
