Tessa Thompson and Michael Shannon have officially joined the cast of Last Meals, the upcoming death row drama from Oscar-nominated writer-director Ramin Bahrani. The two actors will star alongside Mads Mikkelsen and Boyd Holbrook in the film, which is set to begin production this fall. The casting news was first reported by Variety on September 14, 2026.
The film, based on an Academy Nicholl Award-winning screenplay by Justin Piasecki, comes from Sentient Entertainment, with HanWay Films handling international sales. Renée Tab is producing the project.
What Roles Will Tessa Thompson and Michael Shannon Play
Tessa Thompson will play Hannah, an ambitious local food critic who becomes drawn into the story of Walter, a once-celebrated chef who now prepares last meals for death row inmates. Hannah has greater journalistic ambitions and finds renewed purpose in Walter and Reed’s story. Initially challenging Walter’s ego and exposing his flaws, she ultimately becomes a crucial ally to him and Reed.
Michael Shannon will play Governor George Callahan, a consequential figure in the political and clemency battle at the center of the story. His character plays a key role in the fight for Reed’s possible freedom.
The film reunites Shannon with Bahrani following their previous collaborations on 99 Homes and HBO’s Fahrenheit 451. Shannon also stars in Bahrani’s upcoming film Vegas: A Love Story, which is currently in post-production.
What Is Last Meals About
Last Meals tells the story of Walter Karat, played by Mads Mikkelsen, a former White House Chef whose fall from grace lands him in the kitchen of a maximum security prison cooking for death row inmates. His carefully controlled existence is disrupted by Reed, played by Boyd Holbrook, an inmate who refuses both food and the time Walter attempts to give him.
As Walter confronts Reed, an unexpected and deeper connection develops between the two men. Walter begins to believe Reed may be innocent, and their growing bond drives him to uncover the truth.
The story follows Walter, Reed, and Hannah as they go on a journey of guilt, reconciliation, and justice. Their efforts capture national attention amid a heated presidential campaign and place Reed’s plight in the spotlight. Walter then faces a life-defining choice: pursue a second chance at career glory or risk everything to fight for something that truly matters.

Filming on Last Meals is scheduled to begin in fall 2026, with production taking place in the coming months.

Worldwide airline rights are handled by Skeye Inflight Entertainment. Sentient Entertainment has confirmed territorial partnerships with Vuelta Germany in Germany and Austria, and Scanbox in Scandinavia.
For North America, distribution is being handled by UTA Independent Film Group, WME, and Sentient Entertainment.
