Fans of the Shelby family can rejoice, as the world of Peaky Blinders is officially expanding. Netflix and the BBC have announced a new sequel series that will continue the gangster saga, with creator Steven Knight returning to write and Cillian Murphy joining as an executive producer. The project has received a direct order for two new seasons, ensuring that the Shelby legacy will live on through a new generation.
The new show will not be a direct continuation but rather a new chapter, moving the story forward in time. It will be set in Britain in 1953, a decade after the events of the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie. This new series will explore a different era for both the city of Birmingham and the infamous family at the heart of the story.
The New Story and Setting
The sequel series will pick up in a Birmingham that is undergoing massive change. The city was heavily bombed during World War II, and the new story will focus on its ambitious reconstruction.
The official plot states that the race to own and control Birmingham’s massive rebuilding effort will become a “brutal contest of mythical dimensions.” This sets the stage for a new kind of power struggle, full of the same danger and opportunity that defined the original series. The Shelby family will once again be at the center of the action, ensuring the streets of Birmingham remain blood-soaked.
Steven Knight shared his excitement about this new direction, stating:
โIโm thrilled to be announcing this new chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. Once again it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz. The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride.โ
The People Behind the Scenes
The core creative team behind the original Peaky Blinders is returning to shepherd this new project. Steven Knight, the creator and writer of the global phenomenon, will continue in that role for the sequel series. He will be joined by Cillian Murphy, who portrayed Tommy Shelby for all six original seasons. While Murphy is not confirmed to act in the new series, his involvement as an executive producer provides a strong link to the original show.
The series will be a production by Kudos and Garrison Drama, the same teams responsible for the original series’ later seasons and the upcoming film. The show will be filmed at Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham, maintaining the production’s deep connection to the city where the story is set.
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, commented on the announcement, saying:
โThis game-changing show made a huge impact when it first came to our screens 12 years ago and it is one of the BBCโs most-loved dramas. Steven has worked his magic once again and I canโt wait for his scripts to be brought to life when filming begins in Birmingham.”
What to Expect: Episodes and Release
The commitment from Netflix and the BBC is for two full seasons. Each season will consist of six episodes, with each episode running for 60 minutes. This two-season order ensures a substantial new story for fans to enjoy.
While an exact release date has not been announced, the timeline for the Peaky Blinders universe is becoming clearer. The sequel series will begin after the events of the upcoming film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. That movie, which has finished filming and is currently in post-production, is expected to be released first.
The new series is currently in pre-production, and casting announcements for the new generation of Shelbys are expected in the future. The producers are keeping the specific characters under wraps for now.
Mona Qureshi from Netflix added:
โWe couldnโt be more excited to be embarking on a new chapter of Peaky Blinders with our wonderful partners at Kudos, Garrison Drama and the BBC. There are few modern storytellers to match Steven Knight and we will be on the edge of our seats as he returns to the streets of Birmingham and to the next generation of the Shelby family.”
