During the pods on Love Is Blind Season 9, contestant Madison opened up to Joe about her life with a degenerative eye condition, revealing the real possibility that she could one day go blind. The conversation added a significant layer of reality to the experimental dating show.

The Emotional Revelation

During their blind date, Madison told Joe about her diagnosis. She explained the condition affects her daily life and shared her hopes for a partner who could understand her potential future.

“I currently am fully functional. My eyes don’t look weird or anything. But I have something called retinitis pigmentosa, which is a degenerative eye condition,” Madison told him. “I have a hard time seeing in low light and, like, peripherally. The amount of times I’ve had people trying to give me a high-five or something, and I’ll miss it.”

She was direct about the potential outcome, stating, “It’s important to know that there is a possibility that my eyesight could get worse. It can lead to blindness.”

Understanding Retinitis Pigmentosa

Madison, who is now 28 and was diagnosed at 21, has used her platform to educate people about retinitis pigmentosa. She serves as a brand ambassador for the Foundation Fighting Blindness.

On her Instagram, she described the condition as impacting the “rods and cones in my eyes, making it harder for my eyes to intake light sensory.” She compared her field of vision to a spotlight that narrows significantly in low light, making it difficult to see peripherally in dimly lit places like restaurants or bars. She also lives with a constant “filter” over her vision, similar to TV static.

Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of conditions that cause the light-sensitive cells in the retina to gradually degenerate. Vision loss is progressive, often beginning with difficulty in low light and a loss of side vision, sometimes leading to “tunnel vision.”

Joe’s Reaction and Support

Joe was initially shocked by the news, telling Madison, “I’m sorry to hear that.” He took a moment to process the information and asked if vision loss was a certainty. Madison explained that the progression varies greatly from person to person.

“I’ve met people that are younger than me that have far less vision than me. So, it is so dependent on the person,” she said.

When Joe asked if there was anything that could be done, Madison confirmed there is currently no cure. She shared that her condition was a key reason for joining the social experiment, explaining she wanted “to feel those emotions with somebody without seeing them, you know, prior to potentially going blind.”

Joe thanked her for sharing and assured her of his support, saying that if his wife were affected by such a condition, he would “love to help and take care.” He affirmed that the revelation did not change how he felt about her.

Raising Awareness for the Vision Loss Community

By sharing her story on a global stage, Madison is shining a light on the realities of living with a blinding disease. The Foundation Fighting Blindness expressed pride in her for using her platform to represent the vision loss community and to start important conversations worldwide.

Her openness on the show provides a relatable look at the personal challenges and uncertainties that come with a degenerative condition, all while navigating the complex journey of finding love.
