The filmmaker behind The Sixth Sense and Trap has taken an unexpected turn. After more than 30 years in Hollywood, M. Night Shyamalan has started his own YouTube channel. He surprised fans on August 27, 2026, with a simple post on X: “Starting my YouTube channel today.”

The move comes without any press release or studio support. Instead, Shyamalan chose a direct path to connect with his audience. His first video, titled “This is my first YouTube video,” runs just over two minutes. In it, he admits he does not know exactly where this new project will go. He wants to step into the unknown alongside his viewers.

The channel has already gained over 100,000 subscribers and one of his videos has drawn 1.5 million views.

Reading a 25-Year-Old Diary from ‘Signs’

The second video from Shyamalan offers something truly personal. Titled “EP. 01 Signs,” it runs for 16 minutes and 20 seconds. In it, the director reads from a production journal he kept while making the 2002 sci-fi thriller Signs. He had not opened that notebook in 25 years.

Shyamalan described the diary-reading as harder than he expected. The video mixes his old notes with footage and photos from the set of Signs, including a younger Shyamalan and actor Mel Gibson. He shares personal recollections of making the film, which was in production on September 11, 2001.

“When I’m scared, I usually feel like I’m doing something right.”

This format is a big change from the usual Hollywood marketing. Instead of a polished trailer or red carpet event, Shyamalan is sharing raw, behind-the-scenes moments. He describes the channel as a place to “reflect and get to know each other.” He also wants to embrace the “messiness” of the creative process and give himself permission to be imperfect.

“It’s like 30 years making movies and I want to undo it a little bit, you know, undo whatever stigmas are in my head or in anybody’s head.”

He even shows viewers a bench outside his office where he goes to think and a tree he planted in memory of his father, who passed away earlier this year.

Hollywood’s New Playbook

The timing of Shyamalan’s YouTube channel is interesting. It comes just as Warner Bros. released the first teaser for his upcoming movie, Remain. The film is a supernatural romantic thriller. Shyamalan developed the idea with bestselling author Nicholas Sparks.

This move points to a new strategy in Hollywood. For years, young creators like Kane Parsons ( Backrooms ) and Curry Barker ( Obsession ) have used YouTube to build huge followings. Their work has even led to successful theatrical movies. Now, an established director like Shyamalan is moving onto their platform.

Warner Bros. appears to be on board with this plan. By releasing the Remain teaser shortly after Shyamalan’s YouTube debut, the studio seems to be using his new channel to build excitement for the film. This shows that Hollywood is finally understanding the power of a real, personal social media presence to bring people into theaters.
