Netflix has won a heated bidding war to bring a new action crime drama to its lineup. The series, Trigger Point,” will feature Joel Edgerton as the leader of a special forces team that has turned to a life of crime. The project, which received a straight-to-series order, comes from the acclaimed studio A24 and the director of the hit Netflix film “Rebel Ridge.”

The High-Stakes Plot

“Trigger Point” is an action crime drama that follows a group of former Tier One Special Forces Operators. After leaving the military, these elite soldiers begin selling their unique skills to the criminal underworld, using a private military contracting firm as a front for their illegal activities. The series will also focus on the FBI agent dedicated to hunting them down.

Joel Edgerton will play the lead character, Red, an ex-Tier One Operator who now leads the criminal group. The show explores the tension between his team’s unmatched training and their new, dangerous allegiances.

The Creative Team and Production

The series was created by writer Harrison Query, who also serves as the showrunner. Query’s spec script for the show was at the center of a seven-way bidding war last May before it was ultimately landed by A24. The project was then shopped to various buyers with two completed scripts and Joel Edgerton already attached to star, sparking another competitive situation.

Director Jeremy Saulnier, known for his work on the Netflix action thriller “Rebel Ridge” as well as critically acclaimed films like “Green Room,” is set to direct and executive produce. The executive production team also includes Joe Hipps from Cut To company, who has a producing deal with A24 and previously worked on Netflix’s “Ozark.”

The series is set to run for eight episodes.

The Road to Netflix

The path for “Trigger Point” to find a home was highly competitive. After A24 secured the rights to Query’s spec script, the packaged project with Edgerton attached and Saulnier to direct attracted immediate interest. The final round of bidding came down to Netflix and Apple TV, both of which made straight-to-series offers. Netflix ultimately prevailed, marking another win for the streamer during an active fall TV market.

This series is the second project from A24 to get a straight-to-series order following a bidding war in the past month and a half, demonstrating the studio’s growing influence in television production.

Joel Edgerton’s Rising Profile

Joel Edgerton’s involvement was a key factor in the project’s appeal. The actor is currently receiving significant awards attention for his lead role in “Train Dreams,” which recently began streaming on Netflix. On television, he recently finished production on the second season of Apple TV’s “Dark Matter,” which he both stars in and executive produces, and which is set to premiere in 2026.

Edgerton’s prominent film credits include roles in “The Great Gatsby,” “Loving,” and the “Star Wars” prequels and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series, as well as writing, directing, and starring in “The Gift” and “Boy Erased.”

A Different ‘Trigger Point’

This new series is distinct from the existing British crime thriller of the same name that airs on ITV and stars Vicky McClure as a police bomb disposal expert. That series, which recently launched its third season, is an unrelated production.

When to Watch

While an exact release date has not been announced, “Trigger Point” is now in active development at Netflix. The combination of Joel Edgerton’s star power, Harrison Query’s writing, Jeremy Saulnier’s direction, and A24’s production pedigree makes this one of the more anticipated action series in development.
