Story Recap: What Happened Before in Season 9
Season 9 began with the 118 team dealing with the emotional fallout from the death of their beloved captain, Bobby Nash (played by Peter Krause, who left the series). Chimney was promoted to captain, a role he has been trying to grow into while managing the team’s grief.
A major storyline this season involves Hen Wilson’s mysterious health issues. She has been experiencing serious symptoms, including hand tremors and collapses, but chose to hide her condition from her wife, Karen, and her entire team at the 118. In the mid-season premiere, it was revealed she had been seeking secret treatment. The strain became too much when Hen collapsed on the job during a rescue call.
Chimney was furious that Hen kept her health a secret, putting herself and the team in danger. In a shocking decision, he fired her from the 118.
Meanwhile, Buck and Ravi took Eddie out for a night to help him relax, leading to some lighter moments. However, Buck found himself in an unusual situation when he was approached by a married couple interested in a polyamorous relationship, an offer he politely declined.
What to Expect in Season 9, Episode 8 “War”
The upcoming episode will directly deal with the serious fallout from Chimney’s decision to fire Hen. The episode’s title, “War,” hints at the conflict brewing within the 118 family.
Athena Grant is expected to confront Chimney about his choice, arguing that the team is supposed to support each other like family, especially in times of crisis. This will put Chimney in a difficult position as he balances his new responsibilities as captain with his long-standing friendships.
The mystery surrounding Hen’s health will continue to be a central plot point. While the exact nature of her illness is still unknown, the need for chemotherapy suggests a very serious diagnosis. Her storyline is set to explore the personal and professional consequences of her secrecy.
A new subplot will introduce a modern challenge for the dispatchers. Maddie will find herself skeptical when an AI system is introduced to assist or potentially replace human 911 dispatchers. She will need to step up when this new technology endangers a caller’s life.

How the Show Has Evolved in Season 9
9-1-1 is currently in its ninth season and continues to be a ratings success for ABC. The series, created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, originally premiered on Fox in 2018 before moving to ABC for its seventh season. Season 9 has taken the characters to new heightsโliterallyโwith storylines involving a space mission for Athena and Hen earlier in the season. Despite these large-scale events, the heart of the show remains the intense, character-driven emergencies faced by Los Angeles first responders.
Season 9 is planned to have a total of 18 episodes. With Episode 8, the season moves past its midpoint, setting up major character arcs for the second half of the year.
