Matthew Lillard, known for his roles in Scream and Five Nights at Freddy’s, is giving fans a clear picture of what makes Mike Flanagan’s upcoming Carrie TV series different from every movie version that came before. The actor, who plays Principal Grayle in the eight-episode Prime Video show, explains that Flanagan went back to Stephen King’s original book and pulled out important elements that even the famous 1976 Brian De Palma film left on the page. According to Lillard, the new series expands the story far beyond the prom scene that everyone remembers.

Lillard confirmed that filming for the series wrapped in Vancouver just before Christmas 2025. In multiple interviews, he has described the show as “brilliant” and “really fantastic,” revealing that he has already seen the first three finished episodes. He warns fans that waiting for the release will be the hardest part because the quality is so high .

What The Old ‘Carrie’ Movies Left Out

The biggest difference between Flanagan’s version and the films from 1976, 2002, and 2013 comes down to storytelling scope. Lillard explains that previous adaptations, including the iconic De Palma film, only focused on one part of the book. The movies zeroed in on the prom sequence, the pig blood, and Carrie’s rampage. But King’s novel contains much more material that was never put on screen .

“The book is pretty dense and has this rich tapestry of things that weren’t in the De Palma film,” Lillard told ScreenRant. “Mike went back, pulled out other elements from the book, then took real-life examples of what’s happening with bullying in America and applied them to this new adaptation” .

Flanagan built the series around three different groups of people. The story looks at the situation from the parents’ point of view, the faculty at the high school, and the students themselves. This three-level structure allows the show to explore how bullying affects an entire community, not just the victim and the bullies .

Lillard calls the adult cast members the “varsity team,” describing them as seasoned actors watching the younger generation deliver incredible performances. He specifically praised Samantha Sloyan, who plays Margaret White, Carrie’s religious fanatic mother. Lillard believes Sloyan’s performance in the iconic role will be a “star-making turn” for her .

Connecting The Story To Modern America

Flanagan did not simply add deleted scenes from the book. He also updated the context to make it hit closer to home for today’s audience. Lillard revealed that the showrunner looked at real headlines about bullying in America and wove those situations into the script .

“He’s literally ripping things from the headlines and applying them to modern day so that people can relate to what Carrie’s going through,” Lillard explained .

This approach makes the show feel fresh despite being based on a novel from 1974. The actor emphasized that Flanagan adapted the story “to fit into the world we’re living in now,” which should help viewers connect with Carrie’s pain and isolation on a deeper level .

Who Plays Who In The New Series

The cast features a mix of young rising stars and familiar faces from Flanagan’s previous work. Summer H. Howell takes on the challenging role of Carrie White. She joins the project after initial reports suggested Milly Shapiro (Hereditary) was in talks for the part .

Samantha Sloyan plays Margaret White, the role made famous by Piper Laurie in the 1976 film. The rest of the main cast includes Siena Agudong as the sympathetic Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as the vicious Chris Hargensen, Arthur Conti as Billy Nolan, and Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross .

Amber Midthunder plays Miss Desjardin, the gym teacher who tries to help Carrie. Matthew Lillard portrays Principal Grayle, a character who represents the school administration’s role in the tragedy .

Flanagan also packed the series with guest stars from his regular rotation of actors. Heather Graham, Kate Siegel (Flanagan’s wife), Michael Trucco, Rahul Kohli, and Katee Sackhoff all appear in the series .

How Flanagan Works On Set

Lillard had nothing but praise for how Mike Flanagan runs his productions. The actor, who first worked with Flanagan on the Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck, described the director as “the single greatest force of nature in this industry” .

The Carrie team rehearsed for three weeks before filming started. During that time, Flanagan had already planned every shot in the entire series down to the minute. He even developed an app so the cast and crew could track where they were in the shooting schedule .

Lillard was shocked by how fast Flanagan moved after filming wrapped. “We saw the first three episodes cut before we even left Vancouver, Mike had already finished and picture-locked the first three episodes, which was remarkable,” he told GamesRadar+ .

Release Timeline And Streaming Details

Prime Video will release all eight episodes of Carrie around October 2026, just in time for the Halloween season. The show does not have a specific premiere date yet, but sources confirm it will arrive in the fall .

The series will stream on Prime Video in all major regions including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and India. Viewers worldwide will need an active Prime subscription to watch it.

Production took approximately six months in Vancouver, wrapping in late 2025. This timeline gives Flanagan and his team plenty of time to complete post-production on the remaining episodes before the fall release .

Another King Collaboration

Mike Flanagan continues to build an impressive resume of Stephen King adaptations. He previously directed Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, both of which received strong reviews from critics and King fans. His film The Life of Chuck, which also stars Lillard, won the People’s Choice Award at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival .

After Carrie, Flanagan plans to adapt King’s The Dark Tower series for Prime Video. He is also developing a new take on The Exorcist starring Scarlett Johansson .

For Lillard, working with Flanagan has become a career highlight. “For me, being in Mike Flanagan’s world is one of the best things that ever happened in my career,” he said. “Just being amongst those people, they become friends. And that has been just an unbelievable experience” .

The actor stays incredibly busy outside of Carrie. He will appear in Scream 7, which releases February 27, 2026. He also stars in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (December 5, 2025) and joins the second season of both Daredevil: Born Again and Cross on Prime Video .
