The fifth episode of Outlander Season 8, titled “Send For The Devil,” brought major shocks and intense battle action on April 3, 2026. Fans watched as Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) prepared to defend Fraser’s Ridge from the traitorous Captain Cunningham (Kieran Bew). Meanwhile, far away in Savannah, William Ransom (Charles Vandervaart) made a life-changing choice, only to uncover a stunning truth about his “dead” cousin. The episode, which marks the halfway point of the final season, delivered the tension and emotional weight that viewers have been waiting for.

Jamie Gets Ready for a Deadly Fight at the Ridge

After learning that Captain Cunningham planned to hand him over to the British to be hanged for treason, Jamie knew he had to act. Cunningham had turned many of the Ridge’s tenants against Jamie, breaking the trust they built over the years. Even though Claire (Caitríona Balfe) begged him not to go, Jamie felt he had no choice. He could not let Cunningham take over his land and hurt his family.

Jamie gathered his loyal men, mostly former prisoners from Ardsmuir who would follow him anywhere. He sent a letter asking for help from Benjamin Cleveland, a brutal militia leader known for his violent methods. Jamie knew calling Cleveland was like making a deal with the devil, but he needed more men to match Cunningham’s forces. The episode’s title “Send For The Devil” directly refers to this risky choice.

The fight took place at the Masonic Lodge and later at the trading post. Jamie wore his kilt for the battle, a detail that actor Kieran Bew later joked about. Jamie and Cunningham fought one-on-one, with Cunningham stabbing Jamie in the chest. Just when it looked like Cunningham would win, Buck MacKenzie (Diarmaid Murtagh) shot him in the back. Claire treated both men, but she told Cunningham’s mother Elspeth that her son may never walk again due to the bullet in his spine.

“I’m delighted it’s got as much bite in it as it has. We had a very jolly fight scene. Couple of days, couple of nights, shooting in Scotland with a lightning rig.” – Kieran Bew on filming the fight with Sam Heughan

William Learns a Shocking Truth About Benjamin

While the battle raged at the Ridge, William stayed in Savannah with Brianna (Sophie Skelton). The two shared a heartfelt talk about their father Jamie. Brianna told William that she also did not know Jamie was her father until she was 19, and she resented her mother Claire for hiding the truth. She explained that getting to know Jamie helped her move past the anger.

William, still struggling with his identity, decided to propose marriage to Amaranthus Cowden Grey (Carla Woodcock), the widow of his cousin Benjamin. She had suggested earlier that if William married her, their first son could inherit the title William wanted to give up. The two got engaged and slept together in a gazebo, moving very quickly despite William not being fully sure that Ben was actually dead.

Then came the twist. William went to the Continental Army camp with Brianna to find Roger. There, he reunited with Denzell Hunter, who told him that Rachel and Ian had a baby. William said he was happy for them. But moments later, he spotted an American officer named Ralph Bleeker. The officer was actually Benjamin Grey (Alex Bhat), alive and wearing a blue coat, fighting for the other side. William first felt joy, then anger, and punched Ben right in the face. This discovery throws everything into chaos. Amaranthus is still married to Ben, so her engagement to William means nothing. And Ben is now a turncoat against his own British family.

Roger Finds His Place on the Battlefield

Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) also went to war in this episode. He joined the Continental forces at the Siege of Savannah, leaving Brianna worried sick at home. Roger wrote her a letter, knowing she would be angry, but he could not sit back and watch young boys go off to fight.

During the battle, Roger comforted a dying soldier, helping him pass on in peace. He also carried an injured young drummer boy named Christophe to safety. The field doctor treating the boy was Denzell Hunter, though the two did not yet know they were connected through Rachel. A cannon explosion near Roger caused him to have a flashback. He remembered being a child falling in a London tube station during an air raid, and his father Jerry MacKenzie catching him. This memory connects back to Roger’s time-travel journey in Season 7.

Brianna finally reunited with Roger at the camp, relieved to find him alive. Roger realized that his true calling is as a minister, even on the battlefield. He does not need to carry a sword to be useful. His job is to bring comfort and peace to men facing death.

Cleveland Arrives to Collect His Debt

After the fight ended, Cleveland showed up at Fraser’s Ridge with his militia. He had ignored Jamie’s plea for help during the actual battle, only arriving afterward when the danger was gone. Cleveland knew Jamie had no other allies, so he forced his way into an alliance. Claire watched from the window and said, “Send for the devil, the devil appears.”

This moment directly connects to the history books. Benjamin Cleveland was a real person who led the “Overmountain Men” at the Battle of Kings Mountain. Jamie now finds himself tied to a man whose brutal methods he hates. But to protect the Ridge and his family, Jamie has no choice but to work with him. This deal will likely lead Jamie to Kings Mountain, where Frank Randall’s book predicted that “James Fraser would fall.”

Fan Reactions to Episode 5

After some mixed reactions to the season premiere, viewers praised this episode for bringing back the classic Outlander feeling. One fan on Reddit wrote:

“This finally felt like an outlander episode to me! The knees are back!!”

Another viewer shared:

“It’s going to take me a while to digest that one! My hands are still shaking. But it was certainly well done.”

Many fans also reacted to Jamie wearing a kilt again. One person admitted: “I cried several times, but not more than when I heard ‘je suis prest’.” Others called the episode “intense” and the best of the season so far.

The shocking reveal of Ben being alive also got strong reactions. Fans had suspected Amaranthus was hiding something, and this twist proved them right. With only five episodes left in the entire series, the stakes have never been higher for the Fraser family.

Outlander Season 8 airs Fridays at 8 PM ET on Starz in the USA. The episode streams early starting at midnight on the Starz app. UK viewers can watch on MGM+ via Prime Video on Saturdays.
