The latest episode of Boston Blue brought the heat with a church shooting that turned into something much bigger. Season 1 Episode 13, titled “Beautiful Broken Things,” aired on April 3, 2026, and gave viewers a mix of action, family drama, and long-hidden truths finally coming to light.
The episode kicked off with Reverend Edwin Peters (Ernie Hudson) getting shot in the shoulder during a drive-by shooting right outside his church. What seemed like a random act of violence soon connected to a deeper story involving a fellow pastor with a hidden past. The 80-year-old Ghostbusters star ended up being the episode’s unexpected action hero, throwing a knockout punch while wearing a sling.
Henry Reagan’s Long-Awaited Boston Visit Brings Blue Bloods Nostalgia
Len Cariou finally made his Boston Blue debut as Henry Reagan, the beloved family patriarch from Blue Bloods. His visit gave longtime fans exactly what they wanted. Henry showed up at the squad room offering his opinions on the investigation, acting just like the retired cop everyone remembers.
Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and his son Sean (Mika Amonsen) welcomed Henry with open arms. While the episode didn’t give fans a long dinner scene between Henry and Reverend Peters, the two grandfathers did share screen time during a family meal. Bridget Moynahan has already directed episodes of the show, and more Blue Bloods crossover appearances are expected later this season.
The Church Shooting Case Unravels a Pastor’s Criminal Past
The investigation into who shot Edwin led detectives Danny Reagan and Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) down a dark path. The other pastor at the church, Pastor Charles, turned out to be an ex-convict who had tried to leave his violent past behind. A vengeful former friend tracked him down, putting everyone at the church in danger.
The case became personal for everyone involved. The anti-gang program Edwin worked so hard to build faced potential backlash from the community. The shooting itself was intense enough to make viewers wonder if Edwin would survive. Boston Blue kept the tension high throughout the hour.
“I was very excited in the beginning, because I knew he was a community leader; he was very involved in the church and in the community. And this episode coming up, where there’s a lot going on. I was really excited because they showed me that they had more in mind for the character.” – Ernie Hudson on his big episode
Mae Learns the Devastating Truth About Her Mother’s Death
The biggest emotional punch of Boston Blue Episode 13 came from the family drama. Mae (Gloria Reuben) finally learned the truth about how her mother died. For years, she believed her mom died in a car accident caused by a drunk driver. The reality was much darker. Her mother died by suicide, and Mae’s sister Jill (Holly Robinson Peete) was the one who found her body.
Edwin had kept this secret for decades, thinking he was protecting his daughters. Mae felt completely betrayed, especially since her sister already knew the truth. The confrontation scene between father and daughter was raw and emotional, with both sides making valid points.
Ernie Hudson opened up about filming those difficult moments.
“It was a hard scene to do, in a way, because she’s my baby girl, and you just don’t want to admit that you were wrong. He’s hoping that, if I just speak from the heart, if I just reveal my vulnerability, that she will take it better, and she’s still struggling with it, which kind of breaks his heart.” – Ernie Hudson
Edwin Becomes an Unlikely Action Hero in the Church Standoff
The episode’s climax took place back at the church. The attacker forced Edwin to play Russian Roulette with a pistol while holding a young woman hostage. With his arm in a sling from the earlier shooting, the reverend stood in front of the attacker to protect her.
Danny and Lena arrived just in time. But before they could intervene, Edwin knocked the attacker out cold with a single punch. The moment got a huge reaction from the Boston Blue cast and crew during filming. Hudson joked about the production hiring a stuntman for such a simple move.
“They brought a stunt guy in. I go, wait a minute, so why is he here? They said, well, because you have to throw a punch. I go, you know, guys, I’m 80 years old, but I think I can throw a punch. I mean, we don’t really need to hire somebody for that.” – Ernie Hudson

Generational Secrets Create a Powerful Link Between Father and Daughter
Edwin pointed out something important during his argument with Mae. She keeps secrets from her own daughter Lena about Lena’s biological father. The reverend gently called out this hypocrisy without judging her. He hopes that admitting his own mistake will help Mae see that she needs to come clean with her daughter.
Hudson explained why this connection matters for the rest of the season.
“Lena is going through a lot, being in the position that she is, as a detective. There’s a lot of stuff happening, and at some point, you need your complete self, and she needs that. She doesn’t have that, and I think Mae will eventually recognize it from a lot of prompting from me once I let go of that weight.” – Ernie Hudson
