BLACKPINK's Jennie Faces Cultural Appropriation Accusations Over New Single Title Mantra

BLACKPINK member Jennie is preparing for her solo comeback with a new single titled Mantra, but she is already facing accusations of cultural appropriation. The release is set for October 11, 2024, and anticipation among fans is high due to her effective marketing strategies, including teasers and promotional images. However, the title has sparked controversy, with some users on social media questioning her choice of using a Sanskrit word.

Recent posts on X (formerly Twitter) have raised concerns that the term “mantra,” which originates from Sanskrit and signifies a tool for the mind, is disrespectful in this context. One user stated, “The word ‘mantra’ has literally nothing to do with the lyrics she wrote and it is disrespectful,” indicating that the use of the word disrespects the Hindu religion. Another comment accused her of exploiting Hindu culture through her song title.

This controversy has also brought back discussions about a previous incident involving BLACKPINK’s song How You Like That. In the music video, a statue of the Hindu deity Ganesha was placed on the floor while Lisa rapped from a throne, which many viewers found offensive. The backlash led to edits in the video, removing the statue.

Amid the ongoing accusations, some fans are demanding that Jennie remove her mantra tattoo located on her waist and shin.

Despite this, many fans have defended Jennie, describing the backlash as “fake rage.” They argue that numerous foreign artists have used the term “mantra” in their songs without facing similar criticism. Supporters highlight that the term has already been integrated into Western vocabulary, much like terms such as “yoga” and “karma.” They accuse detractors of attempting to create negativity ahead of her release.

Jennie has previously released two solo tracks: SOLO and an English special single titled You & Me. Her upcoming single, Mantra, represents her return to the solo music scene after a considerable break.
