The excitement for BTS โs return to the United States is currently clashing with a string of bad press. Just days before the BTS WORLD TOUR ARIRANG is scheduled to start in Tampa, Florida, the group and its agency, HYBE, are dealing with a series of problems. From legal fights over fake t-shirts to serious accusations against a famous talk show host, here is the complete breakdown of what has happened.
HYBE Files Federal Lawsuit to Stop Bootleg Sellers Before First Show
With the first US concert set for April 25 at Raymond James Stadium, HYBE is taking a very aggressive legal stance. On April 9, the company filed a lawsuit in a Florida federal court against unnamed bootleggers. These are the people who usually set up outside stadiums selling fake t-shirts and posters.
The legal papers ask a judge to give police and HYBEโs security team the power to stop and seize any fake merchandise near the Tampa shows. HYBE argues that these unapproved goods are low quality and hurt the brandโs reputation. A statement in the legal filing explains why they are acting so fast.
“The Bootleg Merchandise is generally of inferior quality. The sale of such merchandise is likely to injure the reputation of BTS and Plaintiffs.”
The company is also going after the sellers for violating the Lanham Act (trademark law) and unfair competition. HYBE has done this before during tours in 2019 and 2021 and says it seized a lot of fake goods during those operations. This move is designed to protect fans from spending money on low-quality counterfeits.
Ticketmaster Under Fire for Dropping Prices and Adding Seats
Adding to the tension, ticketing giant Ticketmaster is now facing heavy criticism from the ARMY. With the concerts very close, fans have noticed that Ticketmaster suddenly opened thousands of new seats for the Tampa shows at much lower prices than the original sale.
Fans who bought tickets months ago are angry. They paid a lot of money, including fees for fan club memberships to get early access, only to see similar seats now selling for half the price. One complaint on social media pointed out that Ticketmaster also added new rows in front of existing seats, pushing back the people who paid for “barricade” spots. Many fans now feel they were misled by the “dynamic pricing” model, which causes prices to spike when demand is high, only to drop them later. This has left a sour taste for many who are traveling long distances to see the show.
Fallon Show Staff Accused of Racist Joke and Traumatizing Fans
Perhaps the most emotional controversy comes from BTSโs recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. While the episode was meant to promote the comeback, the taping experience turned into a nightmare for many attendees. Multiple reports confirm that a warm-up comedian, Seth Herzog, made a racist joke to the audience.
According to attendees, the comedian asked the crowd, “Which one of them is from North Korea?” This joke upset the BTS members and the fans, as it mocks the serious political divide on the Korean Peninsula. But the bad treatment did not stop at words. The show experience was described as “psychologically tortured” by some fans.
Fans who attended were taken to the Guggenheim Museum to watch a special performance. However, the show’s staff reportedly split the group. A chosen few were allowed to sit close to the band, while the majority were locked in a separate room to watch the interaction on a screen.
An attendee told a news outlet that it felt like being “picked for a team, judged by our looks.” Fans claim staff members looked them up and down before deciding who was “good enough” to meet BTS. One fan on X (formerly Twitter) expressed how deeply this hurt.
“Girls were hysterically crying, and some were begging for a chance. I’m still processing. I’m numb. BTS is about inclusivity, and the show tainted that.”
While Seth Herzog reportedly apologized internally, ARMY is demanding a public apology from Jimmy Fallon himself, holding him responsible for his team’s actions.

RM Faces Backlash in Japan Over Smoking Incident
As the group prepares to fly to America, member RM is dealing with a separate scandal in Japan. Japanese media outlet Shukan Bunshun published photos of RM allegedly smoking inside a non-smoking area in Tokyo.
The report states that RM was at a building in Shibuya on the night of April 21. He and his group reportedly smoked in a corridor where it is not allowed, even after being warned by a security guard. The report also claims that cigarette butts were put out on the ground, forcing a store employee to clean up. Smoking is very restricted in many parts of Tokyo, and this behavior has sparked debate online about artist responsibility.
