The Wilkerson family is officially returning to spread chaos once more. The original cast of the beloved sitcom, led by Frankie Muniz, Jane Kaczmarek, and Bryan Cranston, has reunited for Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, a four-part revival series. The new story introduces a grown-up Malcolm, his own family, and a new generation, all crashing back together for a single, high-stakes family event. Here is a complete guide to the faces, both familiar and new, bringing this long-awaited reunion to life.

What Is the New Series About?

The new miniseries picks up approximately 20 years after the original show ended. Malcolm (Frankie Muniz), the former child genius, has built a life away from his family’s relentless drama. However, his peaceful existence is upended when his parents, Hal and Lois, demand he attend their 40th wedding anniversary party. Malcolm is forced to bring his daughter and girlfriend into the whirlwind of his birth family, setting the stage for a new chapter of comedic chaos.

The Returning Original Cast

The core family unit that fans remember is back, with key actors reprising their iconic roles.

  • Frankie Muniz as Malcolm: Now an adult, Malcolm has spent over a decade avoiding his family to maintain a peaceful life. He is pulled back into their orbit, bringing his own daughter with him.
  • Jane Kaczmarek as Lois: The formidable and sharp-tongued matriarch of the Wilkerson family. Lois remains the decisive, overbearing force who holds the chaotic household together.
  • Bryan Cranston as Hal: The eccentric, well-meaning, and often hilariously inept patriarch. Cranston not only returns to act but also serves as an executive producer on the revival.
  • Christopher Masterson as Francis: The oldest and most rebellious brother, who was sent to military school as a teen. The revival finds him having settled into a stable job at a large tech company.
  • Justin Berfield as Reese: The lovably impulsive and trouble-prone second brother. In the original series finale, he found his calling as a skilled chef and a high school janitor.
  • Emy Coligado as Piama: Francis’s sensible and patient wife, whom he married while living in Alaska. She returns to navigate the family madness once again.

New Faces and Recast Characters

While most of the original cast returns, some roles feature new actors, introducing fresh dynamics to the family.

  • Caleb Ellsworth-Clark as Dewey: This role has been recast for the revival. Original actor Erik Per Sullivan, who retired from acting, declined to return. Bryan Cranston shared that Per Sullivan is currently focused on getting his master’s degree at Harvard. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark steps into the role of the often-overlooked but musically gifted fourth brother.
  • Anthony Timpano as Jamie: Taking over the role of Hal and Lois’s fifth child and youngest son, who was just a baby in the original series. The character was previously portrayed by twins James and Lukas Rodriguez.
  • Vaughan Murrae as Kelly: A brand-new character who is the self-sufficient, studious, and non-binary youngest child of Hal and Lois. Their existence was subtly teased in the final scene of the original series when Lois discovered she was pregnant again.
  • Keeley Karsten as Leah: Malcolm’s daughter, who finds herself plunged into the wild world of her father’s family for the first time.
  • Kiana Madeira as Tristan: Malcolm’s girlfriend and the mother of his daughter, Leah.

Returning Friends and Recurring Characters

The family reunion extends beyond the immediate Wilkersons, with several fan-favorite side characters making a comeback.

  • Craig Lamar Traylor as Stevie Kenarban: Malcolm’s intelligent and loyal childhood best friend, who uses a wheelchair.
  • David Anthony Higgins as Craig Feldspar: Lois’s overly affectionate, longtime coworker and Reese’s friend from the Lucky Aide drugstore, where he is now the manager.
  • Gary Anthony Williams as Abe Kenarban: Stevie’s father and a friend of Hal and Lois.
  • Eric Nenninger and Arjay Smith as Eric Hanson and Ken Finley: Friends of Francis from his days at Marlin Academy military school.

Production Background and Release Details

The journey to this revival took nearly a decade. Frankie Muniz first sparked public interest in a reunion with a 2015 tweet, but creator Linwood Boomer was initially hesitant, liking how the original series ended. Bryan Cranston became a driving force behind the project, which was initially pitched as a two-hour movie before being developed into a four-episode miniseries.

“Having stepped away from Hollywood a bit to focus on other things and get the opportunity to jump back into it in a big way was awesome,” Muniz said about returning to the role.

Principal photography took place in April and May of 2025 at Vancouver Film Studios. The entire series will be available to stream starting April 10, 2026, on Hulu in the United States and on Hulu on Disney+ for international audiences.
