The new Netflix series Unchosen dropped on April 21, 2026, and viewers are already talking about its creepy atmosphere and beautiful backgrounds. The show takes place inside a strict religious group called the Fellowship of the Divine. But the real question on many people’s minds is: where was this show actually filmed?
The answer is a mix of quiet countryside and busy city streets. The production team picked specific spots in England to create the trapped feeling of the cult while showing the big, open world just outside its walls. The show was filmed mostly in Surrey and London, with key scenes shot at Shepperton Studios.
The Meaning Behind the Unchosen Filming Locations
Director Jim Loach had a clear goal when picking where to shoot. He did not want normal, happy-looking places. He wanted spots that felt a little wrong, even if you could not say why.
“We wanted everywhere to feel a little unsettling, even if it wasn’t always obvious what it might be. That informed a lot of how we approached it from a visual point of view – choice of lenses, locations, framing, everything. We were aiming for a psychological claustrophobia for the characters set on a cinematic landscape.” – Jim Loach
The team chose Surrey for a specific reason. It is known as a nice, rich area. But the filmmakers ignored the pretty parts. They shot outdoor scenes at times of day when the light was low and shadows were long. This small change made everything feel unsafe, as if someone was always watching from the edge of the frame.
Surrey and Shepperton Studios
The majority of Unchosen was filmed in Surrey, a county just outside London. The rolling hills and thick woods stand in for the isolated world where Rosie (played by Molly Windsor) and her family live.
For indoor scenes, the production used Shepperton Studios. This famous studio has 31 sound stages and has hosted big shows like Bridgerton. The studio space allowed the team to build the cult’s meeting rooms and homes with exact control over the look and feel.
Actress Molly Windsor shared her favorite memory from filming in the woods. She said:
“I can’t remember where it was, but I really loved the scenes in the woods. There was something really beautiful and peaceful about the location when Rosie goes back in episode one.” – Molly Windsor
London: The City That Breaks the Spell
The show does not stay in the countryside the whole time. London plays a big role in showing the world outside the cult. Major landmarks like Big Ben, the London Eye, and Piccadilly Circus show up in key scenes. These busy spots stand in complete contrast to the quiet, controlled life inside the Fellowship.
This choice was smart. The loud, bright city represents freedom. But for Rosie, who has lived her whole life away from modern things, the city is also scary and confusing. The production team used real London streets to make Sam’s world feel real and reachable, yet completely foreign to the main character.
The Real Building Behind the Cult’s Meeting Room
One of the most important locations in Unchosen is the room where the cult meets. Director Jim Loach told The Independent that they found a real building that used to belong to a religious group. It is believed to be a former meeting space of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church on The Ridgeway in North Harrow, London.
The building had no windows. It had just one door, an electric sliding door that could seal the room shut. This became the perfect place to film the Fellowship’s gatherings.
“They were very memorable scenes to shoot because the building had no windows and only one door – an electric sliding door that sealed the whole place shut… you get 250 people in a room, seal it off from the outside world, you’re not allowed to ask questions or hold people accountable and you put one man in the middle telling us how to see the world.” – Jim Loach
This real location added a layer of truth to the horror of the show. The fear of being trapped in a room with no escape was not just acting. The actors were really in that space.

The Fish Factory and Color Choices
Not every location was about open spaces or city lights. The show also includes scenes at a fish factory. These scenes introduce the character Sam (played by Fra Fee). Director Loach said the fish had symbolic meaning, though he did not explain exactly what it meant. The team used real fish and real workers for those shots to keep things authentic.
The look of the whole show was built around a very small detail: the eye color of the two main actors. Molly Windsor and Asa Butterfield both have bright blue eyes. The production team chose a strict color palette based on that blue. The clothes Rosie wears, the paint on the walls, and even the lighting all come from that one choice.
“We always felt that the look of the show should be really distinctive, so everything on camera is by design. One day we were talking about Molly’s blue eyes, and Asa’s in fact. So we chose a really strict colour palette that kind of pivoted off her eye colour.” – Jim Loach
This attention to detail is why the show looks different from other thrillers. The red color is saved only for Sam, the outsider. This visual trick helps tell the story without using any words.
When Did Filming Take Place?
Production on Unchosen started in August 2024 under the working title Out of the Dust. The cast and crew worked together for four months, finishing up in December 2024. It took almost two years from the end of filming to the release date on Netflix. Young actress Olivia Pickering, who plays Grace, shared on social media that filming wrapped in December 2024, confirming the timeline.
Global Streaming Details
Unchosen is now available for streaming on Netflix worldwide. Viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and other regions can watch all six episodes starting April 21, 2026.
