The Spring 2026 anime season was absolutely stacked. Between the long-awaited return of Witch Hat Atelier, the emotional devastation of Re:Zero Season 4, and the action-packed Wistoria: Wand and Sword Season 2, it was easy for smaller shows to get buried. But if you only watched the heavy hitters, you missed out on some truly creative, unique series that deserve a spot in your backlog.

Here are 6 hidden gem anime from Spring 2026 that you should start now.

1. Akane-banashi

Rakugo is a 400-year-old Japanese storytelling art where a single performer sits on stage and acts out an entire story using nothing but a fan, a cloth, and their voice. It sounds like the least exciting premise for an anime imaginable. Somehow, Akane-banashi makes it feel like a shonen battle tournament.

The story follows Akane Osaki, a high school girl who watched her fatherโ€”once a revered rakugo performerโ€”get expelled from the prestigious Arakawa school right before earning the highest rank. Now, she has dedicated her life to mastering rakugo and uncovering the truth behind his mysterious expulsion.

What makes this work is how the anime frames every performance. A rakugo stage becomes a battlefield. Timing becomes a weapon. The ability to read a room and manipulate an audience’s emotions becomes a fight for dominance. Studio Zexcs brings these internal duels to life with dramatic lighting, surreal imagery, and bursts of color that show how audiences get swept away by the story.

Why you should watch it: If you like underdog stories, tournament arcs, or anything that proves a battle doesn’t need explosions to be thrilling, this is for you. It is one of the most unique shonen anime in years.

2. Nippon Sangoku: The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun

This is the hidden gem that came out of nowhere. Nippon Sangoku is a post-apocalyptic political war drama set in a future Japan that has completely collapsed. After nuclear war, deadly viruses, earthquakes, and economic disaster, the country’s population shrank to one-tenth of what it was. Society regressed to early Meiji-era technology, and what remains of Japan is now split into three warring states: Yamato, Buo, and Seii.

The protagonist is Aoteru Misumi, a low-ranking agricultural officer from Yamato who is quietly brilliant at military strategy. The first episode introduces him as a stoic, rational young man with a wife named Saki, whose fiery personality balances his restraint. But tragedy strikes quickly, pushing Aoteru on a path to unify the three nations.

What sets this apart is its visual direction. The show uses a muted, almost black-and-white palette punctuated by pops of color during its most significant moments. The art direction feels like an old Japanese period drama, while experimental multi-media cuts add a modern, dynamic flair.

Why you should watch it: If you like strategic war dramas like Kingdom, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, or Zipang, this is the show for you. It is a hidden masterpiece in the making.

3. Marriagetoxin

Do not let the absurd premise fool you. Marriagetoxin is one of the most heartwarming anime of the season, blending action-comedy and romance into something genuinely sweet.

The story follows Hikaru Gero, a poison-using assassin from a legendary hitman family. His problem? His sister wants to marry her girlfriend, but the family code says the bloodline must continue. Gero needs to get married so his sister can live happily. The twist: he is terrible at romance. He teams up with Mei Kinosaki, a marriage swindler, to find a wife while simultaneously carrying out high-octane assassin missions.

Studio Bones is delivering excellent animation here, with fight sequences that feel dynamic and emotional moments that land because the show earns them. The series has been described as John Wick meets The Bachelor.

Why you should watch it: The show has heart. It is funny, the action is great, and the relationships feel genuine. It is easily one of the sweetest anime on this list.

4. Agents of the Four Seasons: Dance of Spring

Here is the most underrated show of the entire season. Agents of the Four Seasons is written by Kana Akatsukiโ€”the same author behind Violet Evergarden. Yes, that Violet Evergarden. If you know that name, you already know you are in for emotional devastation.

The premise is beautiful and tragic. In this world, the seasons do not just happen. They are managed by divine Agents who perform sacred rituals of song and dance to usher in each seasonal transition. The Agent of Spring brings renewal. The Agent of Winter brings stillness. And they are all profoundly, achingly alone.

The story follows Hinagiku, the Agent of Spring, who disappeared ten years ago after experiencing unbelievable hardship. Her return to restore the cycle forces her to confront her feelings for Rousei, the stoic Agent of Winter. Their relationship is the emotional engine of the showโ€”two people who have been told their entire existence is about serving others, slowly realizing they see each other in ways nobody else can.

WIT Studio is handling the animation, and it is gorgeous. The ritual sequences use fluid movement, shifting color palettes, and haunting vocal arrangements from composer Kensuke Ushio (A Silent Voice, Chainsaw Man). Episode 9 of this show was one of the most emotionally devastating episodes of television in 2026.

Why you should watch it: If you cried during Violet Evergarden, you will cry here. It is a fantasy drama about love, duty, loneliness, and the cost of caring.

5. Kill Blue

From the creator of Kuroko’s Basketball, Kill Blue is a wacky, action-packed comedy about a middle-aged assassin who gets turned back into a kid and has to survive junior high school.

Juuzou Oogami is a 39-year-old elite hitman working for a covert organization. During a mission, he is stung by a mysterious wasp and collapses. He wakes up to discover he has been transformed into a 13-year-old boy. His new mission: infiltrate a middle school, protect the daughter of a pharmaceutical conglomerate, and deal with other teenage assassins who are also on the hunt.

The comedy comes from watching a hardened killer try to act like a normal teenager. The action comes from the fact that he is still a lethal assassinโ€”just trapped in a smaller body. The manga ran in Weekly Shonen Jump for two years before ending in 2025, and this anime adaptation finally gives fans a chance to see what they missed.

Why you should watch it: If you like action-comedy with a ridiculous premise that somehow works, this is for you. It is fun, chaotic, and has a banger of an opening theme.

6. Rooster Fighter

This is the most unhinged anime on the listโ€”and that is exactly why you should watch it. Rooster Fighter is about a rooster with superpowers fighting demons. The premise sounds completely absurd, but underneath the ridiculous surface, this show has genuine emotional depth.

The series follows the rooster as he battles increasingly powerful demonic threats, protecting humans who underestimate him because he is, well, a chicken. As the show progresses, it introduces more characters and more nuance, and the emotional stakes become genuinely affecting. It has been described as a comedic counterpart to My Hero Academia, incorporating similar themes of heroism and sacrifice.

Why you should watch it: Do not dismiss this because of the premise. It is funny, surprisingly heartfelt, and one of the most entertaining shows of the season. Give it a few episodesโ€”you will be surprised.
