The Season 13 finale of Chicago P.D. delivered one of its most intense hours yet, ending with Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and Officer Eva Imani (Arienne Mandi) standing alone with a secret that could destroy careers, families, and everything they believe in.

The episode, which aired May 13, 2026, on NBC, brought Imani’s 20-year search for her kidnapped sister to a devastating conclusion. But instead of a happy reunion, viewers watched as everything fell apart—ending with a death, a suicide attempt, and one big unanswered question that will hang over Season 14.

A Sister’s Search Ends in Nightmare

Imani spent her entire adult life looking for her sister Shari (Selin Cuhadaroglu), who was taken when she was just 6 years old. The finale finally gave Imani what she wanted—finding Shari—but the reality was nothing like she dreamed.

Shari had been raised by her kidnapper, Russ Kirby (Lucas Caleb Rooney), who later became her husband. She didn’t remember Imani or her real family. She saw Kirby as the only person who ever cared for her.

In a desperate attempt to reach her sister, Imani broke Voight’s orders and went alone with Shari to find Kirby. But it was a trap. Shari turned on Imani and pointed a gun at her. Kirby ordered Shari to kill her sister ”just like Laura,” revealing that Shari—not Kirby—had stabbed a woman to death.

Voight and the team arrived just in time. As Kirby tried to escape, Voight slammed a door into his skull repeatedly, killing him in front of Shari.

”It’s less than a minute, right? But he’s able to do that much destruction, and at the end of it, be perfectly fine and perfectly steady.” – Gwen Sigan, showrunner, on Voight’s violence

The Secret That Binds Them

Before they took Shari to the hospital, Imani found that her sister had slit her wrists. Shari survived, but her life is forever changed. She is now a killer, and Voight is the only one besides Imani who knows the truth.

The episode ended with Imani asking Voight directly: ”Will my sister be charged with murder?”

The show did not give an answer. That question will open Season 14.

Showrunner Gwen Sigan confirmed that the decision about Shari’s fate rests entirely with Voight and Imani. No one else in the Intelligence Unit knows all the details.

”I love that nobody else really has all the information right now. It’s just these two. They’re sort of at this desolate location making this decision.” – Gwen Sigan

Voight’s Dark Side Takes Over

The finale also gave viewers a raw look at Voight’s violence—something the show has explored all season.

Earlier in Season 13, Voight dealt with someone blackmailing him to resign, using photos from his childhood as leverage. That storyline dug into Voight’s past and where his aggression comes from.

In the finale, that aggression exploded. Sigan told NBC Insider that the show wanted to show Voight ”stepping back into that place” of violence.

”It’s natural, I think, you see him lose himself in it… There isn’t really a breath of relief at the end of it. Instead, what you hear is just Shari screaming.” – Gwen Sigan

For Imani, watching Voight lose control was not shocking. It was familiar. She saw herself in him.

Mandi explained that the look between Voight and Imani after Kirby’s death showed how ”very, very much cut from the same cloth” they really are.

What Happens to Shari?

The question of Shari’s fate is not simple. Sigan told Us Weekly that even if Voight decides to hide the evidence, ”can she really be saved?”

Shari is ”so shattered at this point” that both options—jail or freedom—come with serious problems. If she goes to prison, she loses her sister again. If she goes free, she carries the guilt of murder without any way to make things right.

”What does this young woman’s life look like after this? How could she heal if there’s this huge secret? And this huge thing that she did that she can’t kind of repent for?” – Gwen Sigan

Mandi told Us Weekly that no matter what Voight decides, Imani’s ”moral compass is going to be completely just turned inside out, upside down”. Her personal life and her job as a cop are now tangled in ways she never expected.

Imani Without Her Search

For 20 years, Imani defined herself by finding her sister. Now that she has found Shari—even in this broken way—she has to figure out who she is without that mission.

Sigan told Give Me My Remote that this is the real question hanging over Imani for Season 14.

”She’s gotten what she wanted. She’s gotten what really her whole life has led up to… But what does it mean now that you have this thing? And it really isn’t, I think, what Imani always imagined it would be.” – Gwen Sigan

Mandi agreed, saying that Imani now has to figure out ”can they have any sort of relationship” and whether Shari can ”be a whole person after all the damage that’s been done”.

The Bond Between Voight and Imani Grows Stronger

Despite Imani disobeying orders and the chaos that followed, her relationship with Voight comes out of the finale stronger than ever.

Mandi told Deadline that ”they end stronger than ever” because of the secret they now share. The question is whether they hide what happened or bring it to light.

”I think what becomes really clear is how much Voight and Imani are really cut from the same cloth. They were born the way they are, with the instincts they have.” – Arienne Mandi

That bond will be tested in Season 14. Whatever Voight decides about Shari, the secret will follow both of them.

Season 14 Brings Big Changes

Chicago P.D. returns for Season 14 in fall 2026 on NBC. The show will air Wednesdays at 10/9c.

Sigan told NBC Insider that multiple characters are facing ”big momentous life things” that will change the show in Season 14. Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) is dealing with life after depression. Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) are moving away from Canaryville. Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) is expecting a baby with his girlfriend.

”They have these big momentous life things happening to each of them. And so it sets us up [Season 14] to really change with the characters.” – Gwen Sigan

But the biggest change may be the one happening in the dark—between Voight and Imani, carrying a secret about a killer who happens to be family.
