Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series VisionQuest is set to close out the story trilogy that started with WandaVision in 2021. But according to star Paul Bettany, this show is not just a simple ending. The actor promises something that feels fresh and stands on its own.
The series brings back Bettany as the White Vision. Fans last saw this character fly away at the end of WandaVision after getting his memories back. Now, the show will follow his journey to understand what those memories mean without having lived through them himself.
VisionQuest Release Date Confirmed for October 2026
Disney officially set the release date for VisionQuest during their Upfront presentation in New York City on May 12, 2026. The series will start streaming on Disney+ starting October 14, 2026.
The show will have eight episodes. Each episode will copy a different type of film style, similar to how WandaVision changed through different TV decades. This release puts the series right between two major Marvel movies. Spider-Man: Brand New Day comes out in July 2026, and Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
For viewers in India, the show will be available on JioHotstar on the same date. Global audiences on Disney+ will get the series as it releases weekly.
Paul Bettany Says Show Ends Trilogy But Feels Unique
Bettany spoke about VisionQuest on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz. He explained that the showrunner Terry Matalas (known for Star Trek: Picard) did an amazing job with the series.
“It manages to feel very much like it’s somehow a part of that world, an end to a trilogy of sorts, whilst also being very much its own thing, and it is just really good. I’m really proud of it,” Bettany said.
The actor also shared what the show is really about. He described the themes during a talk at L.A. Comic Con last September.
“It is about lots of things, and it’s super exciting, but in the same way that WandaVision was about grief, it’s sort of about intergenerational trauma. It’s about fathers and sons and denial of pain and denial of your own truth and coming to terms with who and what you are and what you could be.”
James Spader Returns as Ultron in a Major Role
One of the biggest surprises in VisionQuest is the return of James Spader as Ultron. Spader last played the villain in Avengers: Age of Ultron back in 2015. His return marks the first time the character has appeared in the MCU since that film.
Bettany shared that the story focuses heavily on the relationship between Vision and his creator. He called Spader “delicious and funny” in the series.
“The story is largely revolved around that relationship, and it’s real fun,” Bettany said.
Footage shown at Disney’s Upfront event revealed that Spader also appears on screen in human form, not just as a voice. This new take on Ultron adds a fresh layer to the father-son dynamic between the two characters.
Full Cast Includes Tommy Maximoff and Multiple AI Characters
The cast of VisionQuest brings back several familiar faces from the MCU while adding new ones.
Ruaridh Mollica joins as Tommy Maximoff, also known as Speed. Tommy is the son of Wanda and Vision. He first appeared in WandaVision but disappeared when Wanda took down the Westview hex. Agatha All Along later showed that Billy Kaplan (Wiccan) moved Tommy’s soul into a new body. This show will continue that story.
Other cast members include:
- Todd Stashwick as Paladin, a mercenary who hunts Vision
- T’Nia Miller as Jocasta, another AI character from Marvel comics
- James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S. , Tony Stark’s original AI assistant
- Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y. , the AI that replaced J.A.R.V.I.S.
- Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H. , the AI from Spider-Man: Far From Home
- Faran Tahir as Raza, the Ten Rings leader from the first Iron Man movie
Diane Morgan, known for playing Philomena Cunk, also joins the cast as an associate of Paladin.
What Happens in VisionQuest After WandaVision
The story of VisionQuest picks up after the events of Agatha All Along. The White Vision that flew away at the end of WandaVision now has all of the original Vision’s memories. But there is a problem. He did not actually experience any of those moments himself.
The series will follow Vision as he tries to reconnect with his emotions and figure out who he really is. Bettany explained that the show is now in post-production. The footage shown at New York Comic Con reportedly featured Vision watching clips from past MCU projects while talking about having Vision’s face but not his memories.
This struggle with identity and what makes someone human sits at the center of the show. Unlike typical superhero action stories, VisionQuest leans into deeper questions about consciousness and truth.

Showrunner Terry Matalas Brings New Direction
Marvel brought in Terry Matalas to lead VisionQuest after he impressed the studio with his work on Star Trek: Picard’s third season. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is a big fan of the Star Trek franchise, which helped Matalas get the job.
Matalas took over from Jac Schaeffer, who created WandaVision and Agatha All Along. Schaeffer stepped away to focus on Agatha All Along, but Matalas met with her when he joined the project. Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum said the series would be a “love letter” to Schaeffer’s work while still being unique to Matalas.
This change in leadership also marked a shift in how Marvel makes TV shows. The studio moved from a movie-style approach to a more traditional TV model with showrunners in charge.
VisionQuest will conclude the story arc that began when Wanda Maximoff created her perfect life in Westview. But as Bettany promises, it will do so while becoming something completely different.
