Netflix dropped a new documentary called Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea on July 10, 2026. The film takes viewers back to one of the worst cruise ship disasters in modern history. The Costa Concordia tragedy happened on January 13, 2012. More than 4,200 people were on board when the luxury ship hit rocks off the coast of Italy. The disaster claimed 32 lives and injured 150 others.
The documentary has quickly become the most watched title on Netflix in the UK. It features never-before-seen footage, survivor interviews, and black box recordings. The film also looks at how the cruise company handled the aftermath and why the captain became the main focus of the legal case.
What Happened on the Costa Concordia
The Costa Concordia set sail from Civitavecchia, Italy, on the evening of January 13, 2012. The ship was on a week-long Mediterranean voyage with over 4,000 passengers and crew members. Around 9:30 p.m., the vessel veered off its planned route.
Captain Francesco Schettino decided to steer the ship close to Giglio Island. He wanted to perform a “sail-by salute” because a head waiter’s family lived on the island. The ship’s hotel manager, Manrico Giampedroni, later said the captain called him to join him on the bridge for the sail-by. Giampedroni thought it was unusual because it was dark and there was nothing to see, but he followed the captain’s orders.
The ship struck underwater rocks known as the Scole Rocks. The impact ripped a large hole in the ship’s side. Water rushed in quickly. Parts of the ship lost power, and the vessel started tilting.
Delayed Evacuation and Chaos Onboard
Instead of telling passengers the truth, Captain Schettino made a series of bad decisions. He told passengers it was just a power problem. He also told the Italian Coast Guard that the ship only had a blackout and did not need help. The Coast Guard call handler asked if there were any issues, and the captain said they were just evaluating a leak.
The order to abandon ship came more than an hour after the collision. By then, the ship had tilted so much that lifeboats on one side could not be used. Passengers panicked. Children cried, elderly people were pushed, and some jumped into the sea to escape.
Survivors John and Meghan Scimone were on the ship with their 14-month-old daughter. They felt unusual vibrations in their cabin and rushed to the deck. But there were no lifeboats left on their side. The corridor turned into a slide as the ship tilted. They slid down, and their daughter hit her head badly. Meghan desperately tried to get a woman on a lifeboat to take her child, but the woman shook her head. They were eventually rescued by a lifeboat captain.
Captain Schettino Abandons Ship
One of the most shocking parts of the disaster is what Captain Schettino did next. He left the ship while hundreds of passengers were still on board. He later claimed he accidentally ended up in a lifeboat. But audio recordings of the Italian Coast Guard show officers repeatedly telling him to get back on the ship.
Italian media called him “Captain Coward”. In February 2015, a court found Schettino guilty of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, and abandoning passengers. He received a 16-year prison sentence — ten years for manslaughter, five years for causing the shipwreck, and one year for abandoning passengers. He is currently serving his sentence at Rebibbia Prison in Rome.
Five other crew members were also convicted but did not serve prison time.
Corporate Accountability and the Fine
The documentary also looks at the role of the cruise company. Costa Cruises, which owned the ship, is part of the larger Carnival Corporation. The company avoided a criminal trial by paying a €1 million fine. It was also ordered to pay more than €84 million to passengers and crew members.
Many people have questioned why the company did not face more serious consequences. The disaster led to major changes in cruise safety regulations. But the question of corporate responsibility remains a key part of the story.
Survivors Share Their Stories
Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea features interviews with many survivors. Here are some of them:
- Meghan and John Scimone — A couple who survived with their young daughter.
- Patricia Sandoval and Nicholas Taliaferro — Taliaferro was planning to propose to Sandoval on the trip.
- Stefania Vincenzi — She was on the cruise with her boyfriend, mother, and her mother’s friend to celebrate her mother’s birthday.
- Rose Metcalf — A dancer who had been working on the ship for four months.
- Manrico Giampedroni — The hotel manager who was trapped inside the ship with a broken leg for about two days before being rescued.
- Manoj Singh — A chef who saw the captain leave the ship in a lifeboat.
- Barbie Nadeau — A CNN correspondent who covered the disaster.
- Francesco Boaria — A fire brigade diver who helped rescue Giampedroni.
Manoj Singh said in the documentary that he lost all his savings in the tragedy, but the experience taught him how valuable life truly is.
John Scimone opened up about the trauma he experienced after the disaster. He said: “When we got home, I was completely broken. I was diagnosed with PTSD, I had panic attacks. I had nightmares.” He also said: “I just fought so hard that night to save them. There were times when I thought we weren’t going to get off (the ship). But I’m so glad we did.”
Despite the ordeal, John and Meghan said their daughter Lilah grew up normally. John called her “the most well-rounded, grounded, incredible 15-year-old”.
The Documentary’s Approach
Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea runs for one hour and 29 minutes. Director Chiara Messineo used survivor accounts, cell phone footage, and black box recordings to tell the story. The film shows how the disaster could have been prevented or how casualties could have been reduced if the crew had responded properly.
The documentary does not include an interview with Captain Schettino himself. But it uses recordings and footage from the time of the tragedy.
The film is streaming on Netflix in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and other regions.
The Human Cost
The 32 people who died included passengers and crew members. Some of the details about how they died came out during the captain’s trial.
One French passenger, Francis Servel, gave his life vest to his wife because she could not swim. He could not find a spot on a lifeboat and either fell or threw himself into the sea. He was pulled underwater by a whirlpool and died from lack of air.
An Italian passenger, Maria Grazia Trecarichi, could not find a place on a lifeboat either. She was wearing a life vest but slid off the ship because of the tilt and drowned.
A waiter stayed on the ship to help lower lifeboats but fell into the water and drowned. Some passengers drowned while still inside the ship as water rose violently.
The final body was not found until November 2014 — more than two years after the disaster.
