The gladiator is down, but not out. Starz has decided to end ‘Spartacus: House of Ashur’ after just one season, delivering disappointing news to fans of the bloody historical drama. The cancellation comes just months after the first season finished its run on the network.

However, in an unexpected turn of events, the show might still have a pulse. The studio behind the series, Lionsgate Television, is already looking for a new home to save Ashur’s story.
Why Starz Ended the Series
The decision to stop the show was not just about low ratings. While the series did not pull in the massive crowds of the original Spartacus show, critics actually liked it quite a bit. The first season holds a 91 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The bigger problem was a business issue. When Spartacus: House of Ashur was first approved back in 2023, Starz and Lionsgate were part of the same company. But by the time the show actually aired, the two businesses had split apart in May 2025. This meant Starz was airing a show it did not own, making the money side of things very difficult to manage.
Reports also suggest that the audience watching the show did not fit with Starz’s current plans. The network has been focusing on attracting more female viewers, while sword-and-sandal epics tend to bring in mostly male audiences.
The Twist That Could Save Ashur
Here is the unexpected part. Because Starz canceled the series, the rights to Spartacus: House of Ashur have now gone back to Lionsgate Television completely. Lionsgate owns the show outright and wants to keep it alive.
The studio is actively shopping the series to other networks and streaming platforms right now. This is not just wishful thinking. Steven S. DeKnight, the creator of the show, has already finished writing the entire second season. The scripts are ready to go.
If another service picks up the show, production could start much faster than normal. DeKnight shared his thoughts on social media after the cancellation news broke.

What Happened in Season 1
The show presented a wild “what if” scenario for fans of the original Spartacus series. In this alternate timeline, Ashur, the traitorous Syrian played by Nick E. Tarabay, does not die in Spartacus: Vengeance. Instead, he kills Spartacus and gets rewarded by Rome. He receives control of the gladiator school where he once suffered as a slave.
The first season ran for 10 episodes and was packed with betrayals, bloody fights, and political schemes. Lucy Lawless made a guest appearance in the first episode as Lucretia to help set up the alternate timeline. The cast also included Graham McTavish (Outlander), Tenika Davis, and Claudia Black.
The season finale, titled “Hail Caesar,” ended on a massive cliffhanger. Ashur fought Julius Caesar (played by Jackson Gallagher) in a brutal fight and killed him. Ashur then looked at Caesar’s body and said “Hail, Caesar,” completely rewriting history.
What Fans Are Saying
Viewers who stuck with the show are upset about the cancellation but holding out hope for a save. Many point to episode six, “Empty Things,” as the strongest episode of the season. Fans believe the show proved it could deliver the same tension and violence as the original series.
However, there is a time limit for those who want to watch the show on Starz. The series will leave the Starz streaming platforms on June 1st, 2026.
Will Another Network Step Up
Lionsgate has not announced any potential buyers yet. But the combination of a ready-to-go Season 2 script, a dedicated fanbase, and strong critical reviews gives the show a real chance at survival.
For now, Ashur’s fate is unknown. The character survived death once in the original series timeline. Fans are now waiting to see if the show can survive its real-life battle with the business side of television.
