Stranger Things star Sadie Sink has been cast as the lead in The Marriage Plot, a new limited series ordered by FX for Hulu. The project is based on Jeffrey Eugenides’ acclaimed 2011 novel of the same name. This marks a major career move for the 24-year-old actress as she builds her portfolio following the conclusion of the hit Netflix series.

The series comes from a powerhouse team including writer Will Arbery (HBO’s Succession) and director Hiro Murai (FX’s Atlanta, This Is America music video). The show will be produced by A24 alongside FX Productions. Sink will also serve as an executive producer on the series.

‘The Marriage Plot’ Story and Creative Team Details

The story follows three recent college graduates who find themselves stuck in an intense love triangle. They struggle to balance their romantic dreams with the challenges of becoming adults. The characters must make big decisions about love and who they want to be.

Will Arbery, who wrote the Pulitzer Prize-finalist play Heroes of the Fourth Turning and worked on Succession, is writing the adaptation. Hiro Murai will direct. Murai is known for producing and directing Atlanta and Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay. He is also developing his first feature film Bushido, a samurai movie, at A24.

“The Marriage Plot is a perfect fit for FX: ambitious, character-driven storytelling that offers another great opportunity to partner with exceptional artists,” said Gina Balian, President of FX Entertainment.

The executive producers include Arbery, Murai, Steven Prinz, Rachel Jacobs, Michael Costigan, Jason Bateman, Eugenides, Sink, Carver Karaszewski, and Claudia Shin. Yiyi Huang will serve as a producer. FX has already approved the series.

What Is the Novel ‘The Marriage Plot’ About?

Jeffrey Eugenides won the Pulitzer Prize for his novel Middlesex in 2003. He also wrote The Virgin Suicides. His 2011 novel The Marriage Plot takes place at Brown University in the early 1980s. The story centers on Madeleine Hanna, an English major writing her thesis on classic marriage plots in novels by Jane Austen and George Eliot.

Two very different men enter Madeleine’s life. Leonard Bankhead is a charming biology student dealing with bipolar disorder. Mitchell Grammaticus studies religion and believes Madeleine is meant to be his partner. After graduation, Madeleine and Leonard move to Cape Cod. Mitchell travels through Europe and India to find answers about life, God, and love.

The novel was a New York Times Notable Book and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Critics praised its smart look at love, literature, and growing up.

Sadie Sink’s Busy Career After Stranger Things

Sadie Sink became famous for playing Max Mayfield on Stranger Things. Her other film and TV credits include The Whale with Brendan Fraser, Fear Street, and The Glass Castle. She earned a Critics Choice Award nomination for her role in The Whale.

On stage, Sink received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play for John Proctor Is the Villain on Broadway. She also performed as Juliet in Romeo & Juliet on London’s West End opposite Noah Jupe.

Sink is set to appear next in Spider-Man: Brand New Day as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She will also executive produce the film adaptation of John Proctor Is the Villain for Universal. She remains represented by WME.

Where and When to Watch ‘The Marriage Plot’

The Marriage Plot limited series will stream on Hulu in the United States. It will air on FX linear channels as well. The show will be produced by A24 and FX Productions. An official release date has not been announced yet. International streaming details for viewers in the UK, Canada, Australia, and India will be confirmed by Disney/Hulu at a later date.
