Matt Damon just made a big confession about working with director Christopher Nolan. The actor, who plays the lead role of Odysseus in Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey, said it was the toughest movie he has ever made. Damon shared these details while taking a break from filming to attend the California Adopt-A-Pet Day event in Los Angeles on June 6, 2026.

The Oscar-winning actor spent time with rescue dogs at the Eastwood Ranch Foundation’s Animal Rescue and Adoption Facility. He also spoke about why filming The Odyssey pushed him to his limits.

‘Chris Likes to Shoot Everything Real’

Damon explained that Nolan refuses to take shortcuts. The director is known for using real locations and practical effects instead of digital tricks. This approach made the shoot incredibly demanding for everyone involved.

“It was by far the hardest movie I’ve ever made. Chris likes to shoot everything real. So there’s no kind of green screen, no faking it, no kind of studio stuff.” – Matt Damon

Nolan has a long history of avoiding CGI whenever possible. He built rotating sets for the dream sequences in Inception. He recreated a nuclear test explosion for Oppenheimer without using digital effects. For The Odyssey, he took things even further.

The production traveled across the globe to film in real locations that match Homer’s ancient story. The crew shot in Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Morocco. They filmed on rocky coastlines, inside sea caves, on volcanic islands, and in desert landscapes. Nothing was built on a soundstage.

The Cyclops Will Be a Real 20-Foot Puppet

One of the most surprising details about The Odyssey involves how Nolan plans to bring the Cyclops to life. Instead of using CGI, Nolan built a 6-meter-tall (about 20 feet) practical puppet of the one-eyed monster.

The production filmed the Cyclops scene inside Nestor’s Cave in Greece, using the massive puppet instead of a digital creation. This fits Nolan’s style of making everything feel real and grounded, even when dealing with mythical creatures.

Nolan spoke about the film’s difficulty at CinemaCon in April. He said, “This has been an absolute nightmare to filmโ€ฆbut in all the right ways. We went all over the world to make this film because this is The Odyssey. You’ll be pleased to hear how difficult it was for us because it’s meant to be difficult. That’s the nature of the story.”

All About The Odyssey: Cast, Story and Release Date

The Odyssey is based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem from over 2,000 years ago. The story follows Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, on his ten-year journey home after the fall of Troy. Along the way, he battles vengeful gods, sea monsters, enchantresses, and a Cyclops. Meanwhile, his wife Penelope waits for him at home while fighting off a group of suitors who want to take over his kingdom.

Lupita Nyong’o Faced Racist Backlash for Her Role

The casting of Lupita Nyong‘o as Helen of Troy sparked a wave of racist backlash online. Many critics questioned why Nolan would cast a Black woman as an ancient Greek beauty. But Nyong’o addressed the criticism directly, saying she was unbothered and focused only on giving her best performance.

The film also faced criticism over the casting of Elliot Page. Rumors claimed Page had been cast as the warrior Achilles, which led to public criticism from figures like Elon Musk. However, Page’s actual role has not been officially confirmed by the studio.
