Editor-in-chief Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson) chases a major investigation into a local private club while secretly dating his reporter, Mare Pritti (Chelsea Frei). By the finale, titled “The NS Board,” both storylines reach a breaking point that changes their relationship and the future of the newspaper.
What Happens With the Glass Club Investigation
Ned spends most of Season 2 trying to prove the Truth Teller’s awards were not a one-time fluke. He sets his sights on the Glass Club, a secret local organization with possible ties to a crime involving powerful advertisers. Ned is warned to drop the story but builds a secret team to keep digging. The finale brings the investigation to publication stage. Ned and Mare’s Secret Relationship Becomes a Problem
Season 1 ended with Ned and Mare kissing after the Ohio Journalism Awards. Season 2 pushes them into an actual relationship, but with one major snag: Ned is Mare’s editor-in-chief.
They try to keep things hidden from the newsroom. A stairwell kiss after their shift shows Ned’s plan to keep the romance under wraps. That plan fails. Marv learns about them by Episode 6, and Mare temporarily moves to the better-resourced Cincinnati Chronicle. By Episode 9, rumours about Mare are spreading around the workplace, forcing Ned into damage-control mode.
The exposed romance creates a serious conflict for Ned. He is making big editorial calls while secretly dating one of his reporters. Even if the relationship is real, it is an HR headache. Mare’s time in Cincinnati also shows her a newsroom with more resources and opportunities than the Truth Teller can offer.
The Hospital Incident and the Breakup
Ned ends up in the hospital after breathing in moldy air caused by a muffin Mare left on his desk that he never opened. The revelation leads to tension between them.
Co-creator Greg Daniels spoke about the final moments between Ned and Mare. “We’ve been debating that for sure, and how we ended it in the edit, we went back and forth about the kiss in the hospital bed,” Daniels told TV Insider. “What is she really feeling? Is she over it or is she not over it? I don’t know. It’s interesting.”
The finale does not give the pair an easy romantic ending. Mare breaks up with Ned after he blurts out their relationship to the guys as a way to fight other rumours. Mare seemingly signs a lease to stay in Cincinnati despite her first plan to return to Toledo.
Why Ned Gives the Story to Mare
The biggest moment of the finale is Ned’s decision to give the hard-won Glass Club story to Mare. Instead of holding onto the investigation for personal credit, Ned allows Mare to take an important role in the story. He gives her the exclusive at the Cincinnati Chronicle, with one request: that she share the credit with Detrick.
Co-creator Michael Koman explained the thinking behind this choice. “Our goal is always to combine a newspaper story with an emotional story,” Koman told Collider. “To know how much work Ned has put in over the course of the season to what ultimately becomes his article about the Glass Club, and for him to be able to give that to Mare in a way, or to at least make sure that she was included in that, to me, these are the two things that are the most special to him: to have a piece of journalism that the paper can actually be proud of and to do it with this person, who is so meaningful to him.”
Daniels also described the season’s shape as Ned trying to juggle his romance and his duties to the paper. “Trying to show off with the crusade and having it blow up in his face and having him have to suffer the loss of Mare to another paper and then redeem himself through winning her respect back,” Daniels said. “So that was sort of a shape for the season.”
Domhnall Gleeson on Ned’s Feelings for Mare
Domhnall Gleeson shared his view on Ned’s state of mind during the season. “I think he just loves her so much and he’s just so lost and bereft, and it’s the only time he is a bad editor,” Gleeson told TV Insider. “He’s bad at his job, and I think that’s frightening to him. The fact that he would allow himself to be bad at his job, that he liked somebody enough that he would kind of allow himself to do that because he cares about his job so much.”
Gleeson also addressed the idea that Ned and Mare were naive to think they could keep their romance hidden. “I think it’s interesting that you blame them,” he said with a laugh. “I think we call that victim blaming. I think they get followed outside of work against their will, and you’re blaming them for being naive…. How dare you?”
What Happens to the Toledo Truth Teller
The Glass Club investigation ends, but it does not magically fix the newspaper’s problems. The financial and professional issues that have followed the Truth Teller are still there. Ned’s Glass Club crusade has made his position even more complicated.
The finale shows that saving a newspaper may require surrendering your ego before it consumes the very thing you want to protect. Ned has gone through the season treating the investigation like a make-or-break moment. He realises that the key to professional success often lies in giving Mare a large chunk of the credit instead of taking it all for himself.
Other Storylines Left Open
Ned and Mare are not the only characters with unfinished business. Esmeralda (Sabrina Impacciatore) goes undercover to expose prejudice, reportedly even attempting to impersonate a young boy as part of her plan. Her unpredictable approach can create new problems for the newsroom.
Nicole (Ramona Young) is still dealing with feelings connected to her breakup with Detrick. Oscar (Oscar Nuñez), Marv, Ann, and others also leave personal and workplace threads for further development.
