The Game of Thrones universe keeps growing, and fans have long believed Daenerys Targaryen was the one character tying every show together. A closer look at the franchise tells a different story. A quiet, pale man with a red birthmark on his face has quietly become the single thread that runs through every era of Westeros. His name is Brynden Rivers, and most viewers know him better as the Three-Eyed Raven.
Who Is Brynden Rivers
Brynden Rivers was born as one of the many illegitimate sons of King Aegon IV Targaryen and Melissa Blackwood. He carried a striking red birthmark on his face and neck that looked like a raven made of blood. That mark gave him the nickname Bloodraven . He was later legitimized by his father on his deathbed, along with his half-siblings who became known as the Blackfyres .
Unlike his rebellious half-brother Daemon Blackfyre, Brynden stayed loyal to House Targaryen. He fought in the Blackfyre Rebellions and commanded a group of longbowmen called the Raven’s Teeth. He served as Master of Whisperers and later as Hand of the King to several Targaryen rulers . Eventually, he was sent to the Wall and became Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. After thirteen years in that role, he disappeared beyond the Wall and was never seen again .
The House of the Dragon Vision That Changed Everything
During the House of the Dragon Season 2 finale, Daemon Targaryen touched a weirwood tree at Harrenhal and saw a series of visions. One of them showed a young man with silver hair and a deep red birthmark on his face, wrapped in tree roots. A three-eyed raven flew away from him .
That man was Brynden Rivers . The scene confirmed a theory that book readers had held for years. The Three-Eyed Raven from Game of Thrones was not just a random magical being. He was a Targaryen bastard from the future .
“The first thing Daemon sees after touching the mystical weirwood tree is a hidden figure who almost appears to be growing out of another weirwood tree. This is followed by a three-eyed raven flying away.”
Brynden was played by Joshua Ben-Tovim in the cameo. Since Brynden was not born until decades after the Dance of the Dragons, Daemon was seeing a vision of the future .
How Bloodraven Connects the Three Shows
House of the Dragon is set about 200 years before Game of Thrones. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place roughly 90 years before Game of Thrones and about 80 years after House of the Dragon . That leaves very little room for any character to appear in all three shows. Brynden Rivers is the only one who can do it.
In the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, which A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts, Bloodraven appears in the third story called The Mystery Knight. At that point, he is serving as Hand of the King and plays a key role in stopping a secret plot for a second Blackfyre Rebellion . The show is expected to bring him in during its later seasons, possibly between Season 2 and Season 3 .
In Game of Thrones, Brynden appears as the Three-Eyed Raven. He trains Bran Stark to become a greenseer and helps him understand his powers. His guidance shapes Bran’s entire journey, which eventually leads to Bran becoming the King of the Seven Kingdoms .
This means Brynden Rivers is the only Targaryen who can appear in all three current live-action shows. Daenerys Targaryen has only appeared in Game of Thrones and in a vision in House of the Dragon. She is not alive during the time of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, making an appearance there nearly impossible .
Where We Have Seen Him Before
Game of Thrones viewers met the Three-Eyed Raven played by Struan Rodger in Season 4 and by Max von Sydow in Season 6. The show never used the name Brynden Rivers directly, but the clues were there for book readers . In George R.R. Martin’s books, the character is called the Three-Eyed Crow rather than the Three-Eyed Raven. He lives in a cave beyond the Wall, fused with a weirwood tree, and appears in Bran Stark’s dreams .
The House of the Dragon cameo was the first time the character appeared on screen under his true identity. The birthmark, the white hair, and the raven flying away all pointed to the same man.
