A High-Stakes Launch Party
The fifth episode of Season 3, titled “On the Rocks,” centered on the launch party for Dwight Manfredi’s legitimate bourbon business. The event was crucial, attracting liquor critics and investors to sample the rare, 50-year-old bourbon. However, the celebration was doomed from the start, with threats looming from all sides. Rival crime boss Jeremiah Dunmire, furious at having lost the valuable bourbon to Dwight, was determined to ruin the event.
Jeremiah Dunmire’s Sabotage Plan
In a calculated move to shut down the distillery, Jeremiah Dunmire used his political influence. He met with Attorney General Sackrider, a politician whose campaign he had funded, and threatened him to send a health inspector to Montague Distilleries. The goal was to find violations and stop the launch party in its tracks. As a result, a health inspector named Leery arrived at the event, wielding his authority and immediately beginning a stringent inspection.
The Fatal Moment in the Barrel Room
Leery was escorted to the barrel room by Bigfoot and Goodie, where he started listing numerous health and safety violations. The situation grew increasingly tense as Leery declared there was more than enough evidence to halt the proceedings. When Goodie attempted to bribe him, Leery stated he would also report that attempt. It was at this moment that Bigfoot made a split-second and fatal decision. He destabilized a stack of heavy barrels, causing them to topple directly onto Leery. The impact killed the inspector instantly, leaving the crew in a state of panic.
The Aftermath of a Cover-Up
The crew was left with a dead state official on their hands. Mitch quickly took charge of the situation, devising a plan to frame the death as a tragic workplace accident. They decided to claim that Leery was inspecting the barrel room alone in the dark and was accidentally crushed. This cover-up allowed them to temporarily handle the crisis, but the consequences of hiding a state official’s death are sure to create major problems for Dwight and his crew in future episodes.
The incident was a major turning point in the episode, demonstrating the extreme lengths the crew will go to protect their business. It also highlighted Bigfoot’s loyalty and his willingness to use brutal methods to solve problems, even when those methods have unintended and deadly outcomes.
Meanwhile, the launch party was further ruined when Jeremiah Dunmire and his men arrived, confronting Dwight in front of all the guests and destroying a barrel of the precious bourbon with an axe.
