Jason Momoa has moved from the world of Aquaman to the role of Lobo in the new DC Universe. In a recent interview, he explained how his experience in James Gunn’s new DCU feels very different from working in Zack Snyder’s DCEU. This time, the character is one Momoa has always wanted to play, but his long-term future as the space bounty hunter is not yet decided.

Jason Momoa Highlights the Difference Between DC Universe Eras

During his press tour for the new film The Wrecking Crew, Momoa spoke about the change between the two major DC projects. He explained that a key difference comes from the creative leadership and their planning style.

Momoa said, “I think they’re very different because they’re also different characters. I came in on a whisp of an idea on Batman v Superman until Justice League hit.” He added about the earlier DC era, “It was all pretty mapped out by Zack. He had it all very mapped out.”

In the DCEU, Momoa’s role as Arthur Curry, Aquaman, was part of a larger, pre-planned story. It began with a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and led to a major part in Justice League, followed by two solo films. The path for his new character, Lobo, is not as clearly defined. Momoa stated his current involvement is confirmed only for the upcoming Supergirl movie.

The Uncertain Future of Lobo in the DCU

When asked if there are plans for Lobo beyond the Supergirl film, Momoa was clear that nothing is official. He indicated that the decision likely rests with both the studio heads and the movie’s audience.

“I only know Lobo’s in this one, and so we’ll see what the future of all that holds. I would love for his own thing to be coming out,” Momoa said. He elaborated, “I don’t know if there is. I think it’s probably up to the audience and how they feel about it, but I think he’s got his own things mapped out and I’m not privy to any of that.”

Momoa expressed great confidence in DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, comparing his vision to that of Zack Snyder. “James’s career is just equal to what Zack’s done, what they’ve built and what their worlds are. They’re amazing directors world building,” he said. This suggests that while Momoa does not know the details, he trusts the direction of the new DCU.

Why Playing Lobo Is a Dream Role for Jason Momoa

For Momoa, playing Lobo is the fulfillment of a long-held desire. He has publicly named Lobo as his favorite comic book character for years. Interestingly, when he first auditioned for a DC role over a decade ago, he thought he was trying out for Lobo, not Aquaman.

His excitement for the part is evident. In another interview, he boldly stated about his first scene as Lobo, “I’m f*cking born to do this.” He called stepping into the role a “pinch me moment” and teased that his first scene is “pretty gnarly,” challenging any other actor to try and pull it off.

A short video released by DC Studios featured Momoa reacting to new footage of his character with a single, satisfied word: “Finally.” This simple reaction sums up his journey to landing the role he always wanted.

What to Expect from Supergirl and Lobo’s Role

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled for release in theaters on June 26, 2026. The film stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, following her brief appearance in 2025’s Superman. Directed by Craig Gillespie with a script by Ana Nogueira, the story is inspired by Tom King’s comic book run.

The plot follows Supergirl, who is celebrating her birthday on a planet with a red sun that weakens her powers. There, she meets a young girl named Ruthye, who is seeking vengeance for her father’s death. Supergirl gets pulled into a quest across space.

Lobo, an infamous intergalactic bounty hunter and anti-hero, is a new addition to this story. The comic storyline did not include the character, so his specific role in the film remains a surprise for audiences. The main cast also includes Eve Ridley as Ruthye and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills.
