The truth about Nancy’s life comes crashing down in the latest episode of the Apple TV+ psychological thriller. Episode 4, titled “Nancy,” takes a deep look into the character played by Kate Mara, shifting the story to her point of view for the first time. After three episodes showing Nancy through the eyes of her friends Eleanor and Mary, viewers finally get to see her past and the secrets she tried to hide.
The episode aired on April 1, 2026, and it changes everything fans thought they knew about the murder mystery. Instead of moving the investigation forward, the show goes back in time to Nancy’s final New Year’s party. This is the party that took place before she was killed. Through flashbacks, the series uncovers the painful childhood Nancy survived and the cracks in her perfect marriage to Robert Hennessy (Joel Kinnaman). The biggest shock comes at the very end, when the identity of the mysterious “David” is finally solved.
A Look Inside Nancy’s Traumatic Childhood
The episode opens by showing Nancy’s early life, explaining why she grew up feeling like everything in life is a transaction. Viewers learn that Nancy’s stepfather, Scott, abused her when she was a teenager. She stayed quiet because he paid for her ballet lessons. For young Nancy, this was the price she had to pay to follow her dream. When her mother, Patty, found out about the abuse, she did not protect Nancy. Instead, she blamed her daughter for ruining the relationship with Scott. This led to a terrible moment when Patty drove recklessly with Nancy in the car, purposely crashing into a brick wall. Nancy survived with physical scars, but her mother died in the crash.
This history explains why Nancy struggles so much with feeling safe in her adult life. She is always afraid of being punished if she is not “good enough.” Even at the end of the episode, after everything falls apart at the party, Nancy looks up her stepfather on Facebook. This small moment shows that she has never really escaped what happened to her.
The Pressure to Be Perfect in Robert’s World
Most of the episode takes place during Nancy’s last New Year’s party. For 18 years, she has thrown this party to prove she belongs in Robert’s wealthy family. But this year is different. Robert seems distant and drinks too much. He makes comments about the cost of the party and spends most of his time in his office. Nancy tries to get close to him, even attempting to be intimate, but he stops her. He says he has a lot on his mind.
Nancy’s insecurity grows when Robert’s father makes a comment about how it is a shame there will not be a party next year. She starts to feel like she is losing her place in the family. Her fears become real when she secretly checks Robert’s laptop and finds an email about “separation of assets.” She realizes Robert has been talking to a lawyer about divorce. For Nancy, this feels like the worst kind of punishment. It brings back all the fear she felt as a child when her mother blamed her.
A Mother-Daughter Fight That Changes Everything
Nancy’s relationship with her daughter Cora (Audrey Zahn) is also falling apart. Cora feels ignored by her mother, who seems more focused on the party than on her. Things get worse when Cora comes out dressed for a “white trash” themed party. For Nancy, this hits too close to home. After learning about the divorce email, she loses control and slaps Cora in front of everyone.
Right away, Nancy regrets what she did. She runs outside, scared that she is becoming just like her own mother. Her friends Mary (Elisabeth Moss) and Eleanor (Kerry Washington) follow her and help calm her down. They remind Nancy that she is not her mother. Her mother tried to kill her. Nancy made one mistake. This moment shows the deep friendship between the three women, even though they all have their own problems.
The Truth About David Finally Comes Out
The biggest question in the series has been: who is David? The bartender at the party introduces himself as David. He tries to give Nancy his number, but she turns him down. This makes it clear he is not the man Nancy was involved with. The real answer comes at the very end of the episode.
Nancy helps her best friend Mary by getting Mary’s husband Howard (Corey Stoll) a job with a ballet production. After he gets the job, Howard thanks Nancy and tells her a funny story. The man who hired him kept calling him David by mistake. Nancy laughs and says that man always messes up names and sometimes calls her Louise. They share a playful moment. As Howard walks away, he calls her Louise, and she smiles and calls him David.
This small exchange tells viewers everything. The mysterious David that Nancy was involved with is actually Howard, Mary’s husband. This creates a huge problem. If Nancy was having an affair with Howard, it changes how viewers see her friendship with Mary. It also makes Howard a major suspect in Nancy’s murder.

Where the Story Goes From Here
The episode ends with Nancy trying to apologize to Cora, but Robert steps in and tells her to leave their daughter alone. Nancy is left alone in the garden, thinking about her past and everything that went wrong. The show makes it clear that Nancy could not escape her past, no matter how far she came.
Episode 4 does not move the present-day investigation forward. Instead, it gives viewers the missing pieces about who Nancy really was. Now that the truth about David is out, the next episodes will likely show how this secret affected everyone involved. With Howard now linked to Nancy in a very personal way, and Robert hiding his plans for divorce, there are plenty of suspects left to explore.
