The former child star clears up years of misunderstanding about his health just days before the Malcolm in the Middle revival.
Frankie Muniz is finally setting the record straight. For years, fans have been worried that the actor suffers from severe amnesia and cannot remember his time on the hit sitcom. Muniz recently sat down to explain that the truth is much simpler: he just has a bad memory, not a medical crisis. The 40-year-old actor opened up on the Inside of You podcast with Michael Rosenbaum to correct what he calls “crazy stories” that spread online.
Muniz Explains The Confusion About His Health
Muniz clarified that previous reports suggesting he has no recollection of his life or family were simply not accurate. He admits that past interviews were often cut in a way that made his situation sound very extreme.
“The story of that was taken out of context. I have no memory issues, I have a bad memory. All these crazy stories have come out where people are like, ‘You don’t even know your wife.’ I just have a bad memory.”
He wanted to “clear the air” about the topic. While he does struggle to remember specific days on set from the early 2000s, he insists he is fully aware of who he is and what he has accomplished.
The Real Reason Behind His Bad Memory
The actor offered a very relatable explanation for why his brain tends to let go of the past. According to Muniz, the fast-paced nature of his life since childhood trained him to forget things quickly. He has been working non-stop since the age of eight, constantly moving from one project to the next.
He believes that acting taught him to switch off his emotions the moment a director yells “cut.”
“Since I was eight years old, I have been nonstop doing things. I’ve also been an actor my whole life where every single day I’m pretending to be somebody else… They say ‘cut’ when you’re done with the scene and you forget about it. You never think about it again,” he explained. “I’m so used to just going, ‘I’m done with that,’ and moving on that I don’t even take it in.”
He compared his memory of Malcolm in the Middle to how most people remember high school. You remember the big moments, but you probably do not remember what happened on the third week of February during your sophomore year.
Nine Concussions and Racing
While Muniz denies having amnesia, he does admit that his career as a professional race car driver has not been kind to his head. He revealed that he has suffered nine concussions over the course of his life.
“It’s not like I’ve got amnesia. I have had nine concussions. That doesn’t help,” Muniz joked on the podcast.
Even his current job as a driver shows how his memory works. He says he can race 300 laps, but by the next morning, he might only remember two of them. He listens to other drivers recall specific battles on specific laps, but he simply cannot retain those details because he is so focused on the moment.
Even The Cast Doesn’t Remember Everything
Fans might be surprised to learn that Muniz is not alone in his forgetfulness. While preparing for the upcoming revival, the cast reunited to watch old clips. He assumed his co-stars would remember everything, but that was not the case.
He shared that Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, and the others sat on a couch watching snippets of the original show. Instead of sharing fun stories, everyone kept asking, “We did that?”
“Everybody was like, ‘No way!’” Muniz recalled.
This realization made Muniz feel much better about his own gaps in memory, proving that the passage of time affects everyone differently.
