Netflix’s mystery thriller A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder has become a popular pick for teens who love whodunit stories. But before you let your child hit play, you need to know what’s actually in this show.

The series follows Pippa “Pip” Fitz-Amobi, a 17-year-old student played by Emma Myers (known from Wednesday). She decides to reinvestigate a murder case in her small town that was supposedly solved five years ago. A local schoolgirl named Andie Bell was killed, and her boyfriend Sal Singh was blamed before he died by sucde. Pip doesn’t buy the official story and starts digging for the truth.

Here is the clear answer for parents: A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is not suitable for young children. The show carries a TV-MA rating in the United States, which means it is designed for mature audiences ages 17 and older.

Official Age Rating and What It Really Means

The TV-MA rating is the highest level in the TV Parental Guidelines system. But different parenting experts offer slightly different recommendations. Common Sense Media gives the show a 14+ rating, saying mature teens can handle it with some guidance. Bark, another parenting guide site, suggests ages 15 and up. The publisher of the original book lists it for readers 14 and older.

So why the confusion? The show sits in a tricky spot. It features teenage characters and a young lead actress, which makes it look like a show for kids. But the actual content pushes into adult territory.

One parent reviewer on Common Sense Media wrote:

“I’m 14 and I watched this show and thoroughly enjoyed it without being made uncomfortable by the content, but I can’t say the same will be true for everyone.”

Violence and Disturbing Scenes in the Series

The entire story revolves around a teenage girl’s murder. Viewers see a character with blood matted on her head. There are threatening notes, tense confrontations, and moments where Pip gets physically hurt. A dog is killed off-screen, and the audience sees the animal afterward.

One of the main characters describes suffocating someone. Another character talks about being drugged and assaulted. While the show does not show most of these acts in graphic detail, the discussions alone can be upsetting for younger viewers.

One kid reviewer, age 16, wrote:

“Blood is seen dripping down character’s head due to blunt force trauma, but not excessively gorey.”

Language: Expect Frequent Swearing

The dialogue contains strong profanity throughout the six episodes. Episode one has three obscenities including two F-words. Episode two jumps to eight obscenities with seven F-words. Parents should expect to hear words like “fk,” “st,” “b*h,” and “prk” on a regular basis.

Drugs, Alcohol, and Underage Drinking

This is a major part of the story. Teen characters regularly drink alcohol at parties. The main character gets pressured into taking multiple shots at a drinking game. There is a drug dealer character, and viewers see people snorting ketamine at a wild party in a cave.

The drug Rohypnol, known as the “date-rape drug,” plays an important role in the plot. A character describes being roofied and assaulted. Underage teens try to buy alcohol from a corner store. One scene shows a glass full of cigarette butts.

A kid reviewer, age 14, stated:

“Expect a lot of that too, such as Pip being pressured into taking shots, underage drinking, the use of ket and mentions and depictions of weed and roofies.”

Sexual Content and Assault References

There are no graphic nude scenes in the show. But sexual topics come up constantly. Characters discuss who is hooking up with who. One character has their private photos leaked online. A teenage girl finds condoms while snooping in another teen’s room.

The more serious issues involve sexual assault. The plot includes an adult having a sexual relationship with a minor (Andie Bell was 17). Another character describes being drugged and assulted at age 15. The main character Pip is also assulted in episode three, though a bystander pulls the guy away.

One young viewer, age 15, wrote:

“Common Sense does not tell you everything… sexual violence… one of the characters had been drugged and r*ped.”

For a brief moment during the “calamity party” scene in episode three, viewers can see two people against a wall having sex with clothes on in the background.

Positive Elements in the Show

Despite the heavy content, Pip is a strong main character. She is honest, determined, and driven by a real sense of justice. She wants to find the truth for Sal and Andie. She shows empathy for her loved ones and learns from her mistakes along the way.

The show also features diverse casting. Pip’s friend group includes different races and sexualities. She comes from a blended family with a White mother and a Black father. Ravi, a key character, is played by a British actor of Indian descent.

How It Compares to Other Teen Shows

Compared to shows like 13 Reasons Why or Euphoria, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is milder. It does not show graphic violence or nudity. Most of the adult content happens in conversations or off-screen. But the topics themselves remain heavy. One IMDB reviewer noted:

“It’s like a drama series for young teens, with all of these adult elements thrown into the mix.”

Our Recommendation for Parents

Do not let children under 13 watch this show alone. For teens ages 14 to 15, parents should watch first or screen the episodes together. Be ready to answer questions about drugs, consent, and assault. If your child is sensitive to dark topics or gets scared easily, wait until they are older.

The show is based on a very popular book series that spent 77 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list. Many teens will want to watch it because their friends are talking about it. Have an honest conversation about what they might see before they start episode one.
