The latest episode of the Apple TV+ horror-comedy Widow’s Bay brought fans one of the most intense moments of the season. Episode 7, titled “Seasickness,” wasted no time getting into the action. Wyck took matters into his own hands by digging up the grave of the town’s founder, Richard Warren. What the group found inside the coffin shocked everyone: Richard Warren was not a skeleton. He was still alive, though barely holding on after centuries underground.

This discovery forces Mayor Tom Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys, to face the town’s dark history directly. The episode takes viewers on a tense boat ride as Tom and Wyck attempt to break a centuries-old curse. But as always with Widow’s Bay, nothing goes according to plan.

Tom Wakes Up to Find the Grave Already Opened

Episode 7 picks up right after the events of Episode 6. Tom spent hours unconscious after eating the island’s mysterious mushrooms. When he finally wakes up, his face pressed against a toilet, he realizes an entire day has passed. While he was passed out, Wyck decided waiting was pointless. He grabbed a shovel and pulled Richard Warren’s coffin out of the ground himself.

Patricia calls Tom to the Historical Society. When he arrives, he sees the coffin sitting in the corner. The sight is disturbing enough. But then Patricia casually mentions that Richard is actually upstairs in the building. Tom can barely process what he is hearing. A man buried in the 1700s is somehow still breathing and sitting in a room above them.

Patricia explains that Richard refuses to speak with anyone except the island’s “protector.” Since Tom is now the mayor, that role falls to him. The only communication Patricia managed to get from Richard came through handwritten notes. The notes include awkward lines like “Hello, I am Patricia” and “Are you mad at something I said?”

Richard Warren Reveals the Horrifying Truth About the Covenant

Tom goes upstairs to meet Richard. The man looks terrible. His skin is falling off in spots. He can barely stand. But he is definitely alive. Richard explains that the settlers were starving during the first winter on the island. In desperation, he found and ate the strange black mushrooms growing nearby. After eating one, he came into contact with a dark force living on the island.

Richard admits he made a deal with this entity. In exchange for wanting to live and save the settlement, he agreed to a pact. The covenant tied his entire bloodline to Widow’s Bay forever. He signed the agreement with his own “blood, feces, and semen,” a detail that makes Tom put the paper down and wipe his hands in disgust.

The dark force kept Richard alive all these centuries. Even being buried alive could not kill him. But now Richard claims there might be a way to break the curse. He explains that the covenant only remains active because his bloodline still exists. Since he believes he is the last Warren alive, dying outside the island’s supernatural boundary should finally destroy the pact forever.

Tom and Wyck Take Richard Out to Sea

Richard suggests the group take him out to sea. They need to go beyond an area the locals call “The Dead Zone.” Once separated from the island’s influence, his body should finally give out. He would meet his true death after more than 300 years of suffering.

Wyck agrees to steer the boat. But he puts one condition on the deal. Richard must stay locked inside the coffin for most of the journey. The old mayor agrees reluctantly. Patricia helps them escape the sheriff’s attention by stealing his Jeep. This gives Tom and Wyck enough time to leave the island unnoticed.

Once the boat moves away from the shore, Wyck starts talking about his childhood. He tells Tom the worst thing that ever happened to him. Years earlier, Wyck and his best friend Mark stole a boat and drifted too far out. Something huge struck the boat from below. Wyck remembers seeing what looked like a tentacle under the water.

While trying to climb back onto the boat, Wyck felt someone grabbing his foot. He assumed it was the creature attacking them, so he kicked free. Later he realized it was actually Mark begging for help before drowning. That guilt has stayed with Wyck his entire life. He tells Tom this story as a warning. The island punishes anyone who tries to leave.

Richard Turns Violent as They Near the Dead Zone

As the boat moves toward the Dead Zone, Richard starts acting differently. Earlier he sounded ready to die for the island’s freedom. Now he suddenly seems desperate to stay alive. The shift in his behavior happens slowly at first. Then it explodes. Richard attacks both Tom and Wyck on the boat deck.

The two men manage to shove Richard back into the coffin. But the fight nearly throws Wyck into the water again. Tom hands him a life ring and kicks him loose to focus on the coffin. Tom holds on as the boat passes the buoy marking the edge of the Dead Zone.

Once they cross the boundary, they open the coffin lid. Richard Warren’s body has turned completely into dust and bones. He is finally dead. For a brief moment, it genuinely feels like they have won. Wyck climbs back onto the boat, soaked and exhausted. Both men laugh from sheer relief. After everything they have survived, they actually managed to pull it off.

The Final Scene Reveals the Curse Might Still Be Alive

Just when Episode 7 seems ready to give viewers a happy ending, the show drops another twist. Back at the hotel, a guest is being removed from the property. The camera focuses on a painting hanging unnoticed in the background. The image shows a damaged boat and someone rescuing a survivor from the middle of the sea.

The painting strongly hints that one of Sarah Westcott’s children may have escaped the island long ago. If even one descendant survived, then Richard Warren’s bloodline never truly ended. That means the covenant could still exist. The curse might not be broken at all.

Episode 7 ends with another major mystery. While Tom was away dealing with Richard, his son Evan and Kelly searched through his belongings. They found old photos of Tom’s mother holding him as a child. This directly contradicts the story Tom told about her dying while giving birth to him. Another huge question remains unanswered as the season heads toward its final episodes.

Widow’s Bay airs new episodes every Wednesday on Apple TV+. The series stars Matthew Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, and Stephen Root.
