The hit CBS drama Fire Country is getting a major makeover for its upcoming fifth season. With a new showrunner in place and significant changes behind the scenes, the series is adding its first-ever new series regular since the show began. Olivia Thirlby (Oppenheimer, Y: The Last Man) has officially joined the cast as a new firefighter named CJ, marking a turning point for the show’s creative direction.
This casting news comes alongside the departure of original showrunner Tia Napolitano and the arrival of Eric Guggenheim as the new executive producer and showrunner. The series, which has kept its main cast largely intact since its 2022 premiere, is now undergoing a noticeable shift as it prepares for a shorter 13-episode season.
Olivia Thirlby Joins as Series Regular in Fire Country Season 5
Olivia Thirlby has been cast as Cecilia Jade “CJ” Ryan, a quick-witted, fiercely independent, blue-collar urban firefighter who left her station and city for mysterious reasons. The official character description states she has been on the road for six months, trying to outrun whatever happened and herself, until fate brings her to Edgewater where she crosses paths with Bode Leone (Max Thieriot).
“Despite having no experience fighting woodland fires, Bode believes CJ has something to offer Station 42. And despite the serious culture shock, this fish out of water comes to believe rural Edgewater has something to offer her.”
This addition marks the first time the show has added a new series regular since its debut in 2022, making it a notable event for fans of the series. The casting was confirmed by multiple sources, with Thirlby’s character expected to bring fresh dynamics to the firehouse.
Who Is Returning for Fire Country Season 5?
The core cast members who have been with the show from the beginning are returning for Season 5. Max Thieriot (Bode Leone), Kevin Alejandro (Manny Perez), Jordan Calloway (Jake Crawford), Jules Latimer (Eve Edwards), and Diane Farr (Sharon Leone) are all confirmed to return as series regulars.
Max Thieriot, who also serves as co-creator and executive producer, has described the upcoming season as a “reset” for the show. He shared that Season 4’s finale set things in motion for Bode to close certain chapters and move forward. Thieriot noted that Bode is now in a position to earn everyone’s trust and become the firefighter he’s destined to be.
Who Left the Show and Won’t Return?
Two major cast members left after Season 3 and won’t be returning as series regulars. Billy Burke, who played Battalion Chief Vince Leone, was killed off in the Season 4 premiere. Stephanie Arcila, who portrayed Gabriela Perez, also exited the show, with her character choosing to leave Edgewater for a fresh start.
These departures occurred amid reports of budget cuts and contract negotiations, though the show has continued to maintain strong ratings and streaming performance. The absence of these key characters has fundamentally changed the show’s family and romantic dynamics as it moves into its fifth season.

Season 5 Major Creative Changes
Beyond the cast changes, Fire Country is undergoing a significant creative reset. Eric Guggenheim has taken over as showrunner, replacing Tia Napolitano, who led the series for its first four seasons. This marks the first showrunner change in the show’s history.
The new season will consist of 13 episodes, shorter than the previous seasons’ 20-episode runs. This reduction was confirmed and represents a shift in the show’s production strategy. Production for Season 5 is already underway, with Thieriot sharing behind-the-scenes updates on social media confirming filming has commenced.
The show is set to return as part of CBS’s fall 2026 lineup, airing on Fridays at 9 PM ET/PT. An exact premiere date has not yet been announced, but fans can expect new episodes to begin in late September 2026, based on historical trends. Fire Country continues to be available for streaming on Paramount+ for viewers who want to catch up before the new season.
