The MGM+ horror series From dropped a huge surprise in its Season 4 premiere. The episode titled “The Arrival” showed that the scary Man in Yellow (played by Douglas E. Hughes) can change his shape. He turned into a young, innocent girl named Sophia (Julia Doyle). This trick lets him walk right into the town without anyone knowing who he really is.
The show made its return on April 19, 2026. Viewers in the USA can watch new episodes every Sunday on MGM+. UK viewers find it on Sky Sci-Fi and NOW. Canadian audiences watch on Paramount+. Australian fans use Stan. Indian viewers can see it on Amazon Prime Video with an MGM+ subscription.
The Big Reveal in Episode 1
The season starts right after the shocking death of Jim Matthews at the end of season 3. A car crashes into the town. Inside are an unconscious pastor and a scared girl named Sophia. The townspeople rush to help. Tabitha saves Sophia from sharp metal pieces using a Bible. Boyd and Kenny pull the pastor out.
Sophia acts sweet and scared. She says she is the pastor’s daughter. She asks to pray with Kenny. She talks about God being everywhere. Everyone believes she is just a helpless kid who needs protection.
But when night falls, Sophia shows her true face. She kills the pastor in cold blood. Then she reveals she is actually the Man in Yellow. The villain used the pastor’s car to get inside the town’s walls.
Why a Pastor’s Daughter Works as the Perfect Cover
Julia Doyle, who plays Sophia, shared her thoughts on why the Man in Yellow chose this specific identity. She talked to ScreenRant about the deeper meaning behind the choice.
“I think it’s about the veneer of innocence and also of being sheltered. If she acts weird or does something strange or uncanny valley, it’s okay. They’re like, ‘I guess maybe she’s homeschooled.’ I feel like I could blame things on my religious upbringing if, for example, I have too much empathy or not enough empathy. Also, there are a lot of bad people who use religion as a shield.”
Doyle pointed out that the Man in Yellow needs to move around without raising suspicion. A quiet, religious girl does not look like a threat. If Sophia acts strange or does not fit in, people just think she is awkward because of her sheltered life.
This choice also messes with the town’s sense of safety. The show has always had religious themes through Father Khatri. Now an evil force is using faith as a mask. It makes everyone question who they can trust.
Playing Two Characters in One Body
Doyle talked about how she got ready to play such a tricky role. She spoke with Horror Geek Life about her unusual acting methods.
“I also had two different perfumes, one that’s more of a sweet, innocent scent and one that’s more of pine, masculine, forest-like scent. I could also, depending on which character I’m doing, that was a little acting hack that I learned from my coach, Bruce.”
The actress said she watched the season 3 finale over and over to study Douglas E. Hughes‘s performance as the Man in Yellow. But she did not try to copy him exactly.
“I was trying to, you know, match the Man in Yellow we know so far. But then, also at the same time, realize that that is just one scene and one experience of that character, and that there’s many different sides. I don’t need to copy frame by frame and make sure that I’m copying his face and doing exactly what he’s doing. Because I feel like that can hold you back.”
Doyle made a clear choice. She played Sophia and the Man in Yellow as two separate characters. When she was Sophia, she fully believed she was that scared girl. She tapped into her own Catholic upbringing. She did not try to hint at the evil inside.
The Man in Yellow Gets More Dangerous
The ability to change shape makes the Man in Yellow much scarier than before. In past seasons, he only appeared in his yellow suit. Now he can look like anyone. The town has no way to know if a newcomer is real or the monster in disguise.
The show’s writers chose not to explain this power right away. They let viewers figure it out by watching Sophia’s actions. The slow reveal makes the moment hit harder. When Sophia kills the pastor, the audience feels the same shock as the characters.
This trick also shows something important about the villain. He is not just a monster who attacks from the woods. He is smart. He plans. He knows that fear and doubt can break people faster than claws and teeth.
What Doyle Learned from Joining an Existing Cast
Joining a hit show in its fourth season can feel scary. The cast already has strong bonds. Doyle admitted she felt nervous at first. But she told Show Snob that everyone welcomed her with open arms.
“I was definitely a little bit nervous, just in general, joining season four of a show where everyone is very close with each other. However, I felt immediately welcome; everyone was so nice, and they were so excited for me too. That made me even more excited.”
She also talked about the trust she had in director Jack Bender. His guidance helped her shape the character without giving away the secret too early.
“I wanted to make sure to lead viewers somewhere with my character. I didn’t want to show all my marbles too fast.”
The actress found it fun to play someone who is lying all the time. She said she is a bad liar in real life. But in acting, that works well because her face naturally shows what her character is thinking.

What This Means for the Rest of the Season
From Season 4 has ten episodes. The show already got renewed for a fifth and final season. That means answers are coming faster now. The mystery will not stretch on forever.
Sophia’s reveal raises many questions. Is Sophia a real person the Man in Yellow copied? Or did he create her from nothing? Doyle would not say. She teased that more answers will come in later episodes.
The premiere also showed Julie has the power to move through time. The Man in Yellow asked her, “When did you come from?” That line confirms Julie can travel between different moments in the town’s story.
Boyd is falling apart too. Smiley came back from the dead. Now Boyd does not believe escape is possible. He counts bullets and talks about the town’s last choice being how to die. That is a dark turn for the man who kept everyone going for three seasons.
The Man in Yellow wearing Sophia’s face is not just a cool twist. It is a statement. The town’s biggest threat is no longer just the monsters at night. It is the fear that anyone could be the enemy. And that kind of fear spreads faster than any virus.
