The 2009 KBS2 drama Iris remains one of the most expensive and action-packed Korean dramas ever made. With a budget of over 40 billion won (about $35 million), this spy thriller set a new standard for television production in South Korea. The show follows elite secret agents who uncover a dangerous shadow organization called Iris while trying to protect their country. The series averaged over 30% viewership during its run and won top honors at the 2009 KBS Drama Awards, including the Daesang (Grand Prize) for lead actor Lee Byung-hun.
The Iris cast brought together some of the biggest names in Korean entertainment. From Squid Game star Lee Byung-hun to top actress Kim Tae-hee, the ensemble created a show that viewers still talk about today. Let’s break down who played whom in this legendary espionage K-drama.
Lee Byung-hun as Kim Hyun-jun: The Heart of Iris
Lee Byung-hun takes the lead role of Kim Hyun-jun, a special forces soldier recruited into the National Security Service (NSS), a secret black ops agency. Hyun-jun has a photographic memory, top athletic skills, and knows how to handle any weapon. His code name during missions is “TK1”.
The character goes through a lot. Hyun-jun gets betrayed, separated from the woman he loves, and hunted by both North Korean agents and the mysterious Iris organization. He spends a whole year believed dead before returning to seek revenge. The role earned Lee Byung-hun the Daesang award, the highest honor at the KBS Drama Awards.
Lee Byung-hun is one of South Korea’s most famous actors globally. After Iris, he appeared in hit dramas like Mr. Sunshine and gained worldwide fame as the Front Man in Squid Game. He has also starred in Hollywood films like G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
Kim Tae-hee as Choi Seung-hee: The Profiler Who Falls in Love
Kim Tae-hee plays Choi Seung-hee, a team leader at NSS and an expert criminal profiler. She is the one who scouts both Hyun-jun and his best friend Sa-woo for the agency. Seung-hee can predict terrorist behavior and prevent attacks before they happen. She is smart, beautiful, and speaks her mind.
Seung-hee falls for Hyun-jun, and they start a secret relationship. But when she believes Hyun-jun dies in a car explosion in Hungary, her world shatters. The love story between Hyun-jun and Seung-hee ends on a heartbreaking note that stayed with viewers for years.
Kim Tae-hee was already a major star before Iris, known for dramas like Stairway to Heaven. After Iris, she starred in Hi Bye, Mama! and Yong-pal. She is also known for being one of the few Korean celebrities with a degree from Seoul National University.
Jung Joon-ho as Jin Sa-woo: The Friend Who Becomes a Rival
Jung Joon-ho portrays Jin Sa-woo, Hyun-jun’s childhood friend and fellow special forces soldier. Like Hyun-jun, Sa-woo also gets scouted by Seung-hee and falls for her. But he chooses to hide his feelings so his friend can be happy.
Everything changes when NSS orders Sa-woo to kill Hyun-jun. Sa-woo must choose between his country, the woman he loves, and his best friend. He ends up shooting down Hyun-jun’s escape plane. This betrayal becomes one of the most talked-about moments in the series.
Jung Joon-ho has appeared in many popular dramas including Sky Castle and True Beauty. He continues to work steadily in both television and film.
Kim So-yeon as Kim Sun-hwa: The North Korean Assassin
Kim So-yeon plays Kim Sun-hwa, a North Korean soldier who follows orders without question. She works under Pak Chol-yong and initially hates South Korea. Her mission is to track down and kill Hyun-jun. But Hyun-jun shows her kindness, and she starts to question everything she believed.
Sun-hwa eventually falls in love with Hyun-jun and becomes loyal to him, even turning against her own people to protect him. Her character arc from cold assassin to devoted protector made her a fan favorite.
Kim So-yeon is best known for her villainous role in The Penthouse: War in Life. She also starred in Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 and A Virtuous Business.
Kim Seung-woo as Pak Chol-yong: The Loyal North Korean Officer
Kim Seung-woo takes the role of Pak Chol-yong, a North Korean security official. He is well-educated, having studied in Europe, and speaks multiple languages. Chol-yong is loyal to his government and takes his job seriously. His first meeting with Hyun-jun happens in Hungary, and their paths keep crossing as the story unfolds.
Even though he is from North Korea, Chol-yong is shown as a complex character. He is not simply evil. He has his own code of honor and wants what he believes is best for his people.
Kim Seung-woo has appeared in dramas like My Husband Got a Family and Late Night Restaurant.
T.O.P (Choi Seung-hyun) as Vick/B.I.G: The Cold-Blooded Killer
Big Bang member T.O.P (real name Choi Seung-hyun) plays Vick (also called B.I.G), an assassin working for the Iris organization. Vick answers to a mysterious man known only as “Mr. Black.” He speaks both English and Korean fluently.
Vick is ruthless. He kills without hesitation, including innocent people, to complete his missions. He uses advanced weapons and never misses a target. His job is to eliminate political targets and destroy sensitive information. T.O.P brought a chilling presence to the role that made viewers remember him long after the show ended.
This was T.O.P‘s major acting role as a member of Big Bang. He later appeared in the movie Commitment and the drama Iris 2 in a different role.
